How was that lecture noting the change in direction for the programme ?

If by deploying the second carrier with Nato or the USA means that some of the costs will be met by them, then I see no problem whatsoever,in fact it would be a win win situation for everyone. The way it is worded certainly seems to suggest that may be the case.

I don't see where they are dictating to us,and I can certainly understand the worries they have about our defence cuts.

I certainly appreciate the logic behind that Jonas, however, I don't for one minute think the US would be meeting any costs as they are cutting some $500bn from their defence budget. I think having read it a few times, its a gentle poke at the Gov and just reminding them of the 'special relationship' and how this would be solidified IF both carriers were put into service by 2018. Bit optimistic if you ask me though having both in service by 2018.

Question to the Programme Director - Did the delay over the F-35 variant decision make any difference to the carriers’ construction – will reverting back to the F-35B STOVL jet cause any significant difficulties for you? Answer - The ships were always designed to be able to be adapted for either STOVL or CV operations!

Someone should tell Hammond then as clearly answers we are being given are not consistent at all !

Agree with SDL, great Video showing the sheer size of the project.

Actualy the $500bn you are refering to is at the moment only a threat made by congress, wherebye if the government does not itself come up with plans to reduce the national deficit, the 'sequester' process would come into effect.

They have threatened that the sequestration process will be triggered at the begining of 2013,and will involve $1.2 trillion in government spending cuts,$500bn of which will be in defence.

It is all very complicated, but there is an excellent article in Mays issue of 'Warships IFR' which makes grim reading for the USN if this does come to pass.

The US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta,is fighting this tooth and nail. Believe me it will make our cuts look insignificant if it happens.

That certainly is interesting reading ! I don't think that there is a defence budget in the world save maybe the Chinese, that is not under severe threat at the moment. Maybe we should have some of Panetta's fighting spirit in Hammond, and then maybe he would stop thinking like a Chancellor in waiting.

Wonder if there is any documentary filming of the QE as that would be interesting to watch, does anyone know of one being made?

    Thanks

When the Taranis roles out, these carriers could be converted. Anything is possible that far ahead.

One would truly hope so, or we would end up with a new RN submarine...

Is there any sign of the yard storage areas becoming full? With all the block movements recently there surely is a large jigsaw puzzle in process for the next stage of construction.

Interesting read, jump to pg 10 of the 25 page report.
Other than to wind up retards in the Daily Telegraph's comments section, I question the usefulness of 'reports' from the various think tanks like the one cited. I wouldn't put too much stock into it.

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting on this forum, but I was wondering if anyone was able to answer a question a few friends and myself were mulling over. Does the F35-B need to use its lift fan to take off from a ski jump, all the promo vids just show it going to afterburner. If it doesn't could the F35-C be operated off a ski jump like the Russians do off their carrier and then caught with arrestor cables for the landing. Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but I would appreciate any answers. Thanks

Its starting to look pretty full now. The thing is POW's bow is still in 2 halfs and u would think that putting them together would save quite a bit of space.

Dont worry they will be using the QE bow soon enough and that should start to free up some space
