Anyone noticed how the Phoenix Think tank has gone quiet. I suspect the F35B decision has taken all the wind out of their sails...

In relation to the Future Sloop of War, a brief review of RN history will show that most of the work of the RN was completed by frigates and sloops, with the big men of war limited only to a few actions. Whatever one thinks of Russell Crowe, Master and Commander was a brilliant piece of naval historical film making, and was beautifully well studied. It portrays a typical naval action of the time. Although the weapons systems have now changed, the role of the Navy has not and the Black Swan programme is the future for me, and it has my vote.

You would have thought that been finished in 2014, that the QE could start sea trials, however according to Hammond in his answers to Parliament, sea trials wont begin for a few years. Shame really as the RN crew could be getting familiar with all the kit onboard and how she's different, not just in size but mission capability before any fixed wing aircraft arrive - at least thats what I would be doing.

I know Cyrilranch, sounds ridiculous doesnt it?

I get the no plane til 2017( we would have had harrier ,but some **** sold them for spares to the yanks at a knock down price)

    sad sight

but at least she will be sailing in out Portsmouth or Rosyth on sea trials and stuff, and maybe a passing USMC Harrier sqn. could come and play on our new ship

Completely stupid i agree Cyrilranch. The Tornado is an aging aircraft which costs a FORTUNE to run and before anyone says I'm anti-RAF, nope, love planes. First Plane I saw inside when still flying was the Vulcan. However getting back to the topic, we should NEVER and I mean NEVER have sold off the remaining Harriers for a sing and a song, which is what we basically did. It's aircraft like that which would be still flying off Lusty, and we could have then used them on QE when launched in 2014ish.

Some bright bugger thought he knew best, let's see if he feels the same way at the next general election when he loses his parliamentary seat for being a useless sod !

I count 12 in this pic alone, which strangely enough is the standard amount of fixed wing which the QEC will sail with.........anyone at the MOD that suggested this, well I hope their happy with this picture !

Gotta wonder how bad the situation was to not only scrap the carriers, but sell off all the harriers.... how close was the MOD to collapse?
