    Talking French Crotale for dummies

    http://www.passionaviation.net/terre...rotal-t359.htm

A battery of Crotale, usually includes an acquisition radar, and two or three firing units each with four missiles in position. The chassis used in both cases is a tank 4 x 4 which is raised on hydraulic jacks at the position. Unusual feature, it is driven by an electric motor. The acquisition system is responsible for monitoring the targets, their identification and designation. It consists of a large radar with a maximum range of 18 km, a computer in real time, visual display devices and data transmission. It can support up to twelve targets simultaneously. The implementation of the Crotale is as follows: the acquisition system identifies a target and when it is confirmed hostile, it affects one of the units to which it transmits the information available. The firing unit has a large radar that can simultaneously meet a goal and two guided missiles launched at intervals of a few seconds, a computer, a digital data transmission apparatus and sight mixed visual / cathode used in case of jamming enemy. When available four missiles were fired, four new vehicles are recharged by a crane. A well-trained crew takes about two minutes to complete this maneuver. R.440 The missile has a length of 2.89 m for a diameter of 15 cm and a wingspan of 54 cm. Its total weight is 85 kg. The warhead weighs 15 kg. It is fragmentation for maximum efficiency. It is equipped with a proximity fuse which is initiated after the launch. The rocket engine is a stage solid fuel. It allows approaching Mach 2.3. The range depends on the speed of the target. As an indication, she is 8 000 m with a ceiling of 3 000m for a target flying at Mach 1.5. By intercepting helicopters and slower aircraft, it is significantly larger. The Crotale is normally used (eg South Africa, Saudi Arabia and the French Air Force) to defend air bases and other strategic objectives. It takes approximately five minutes for the system to become operational after its position.

At the end of 1998, the FM-90, an enhanced version of the FM-80/HongQi 7, was introduced to the public. Compared to the original system, the improvements on the FM-90 include:

Using VLSI technology-based computer (designed by 706 Institute) to replace the original LSI technology-based S-9 computer on the HongQi 7/FM-80.
Using digital electronic technology to replace the original analogue design, increasing the missile's abilities against active/passive jamming.
Using a new two-waveband tracking radar to replace the original monopulse radar
An infrared camera was added to the TV tracking system so that the optical tracking system can be used at night.
Target information between search and firing units is transmitted via a datalink pole system similar to that fitted on the later production Thomson-CSF Crotale 4000.
    Re-designed missile warhead fusing system.
In addition, the missile's seeking/homing range, maximum speed, and attack range all have been improved, which greatly increases its combat effectiveness. With a maximum detecting range of 25km, the FM-90 is capable of attacking three targets using three different guidance modes simultaneously. The missile also has anti-missile ability against ultra-low-altitude cruise missiles, air-to-surface missiles, and anti-radiation missiles at a distance of 17km
