    I was wondering if any of you can help a fellow Crotale Fan? I am looking for a model kit or replica of the Crotale Firing Unit pictured in the model here in 1/72 or 1/87 scale.     Sorry to disappoint you Rich, but at least the launcher and acquisition vehicle were scratchbuilt (Du "fait maison", i.e. home made), the transloader vehicle being apparently modified from a commercially available kit - in 1/50 scale, if the builder's other projects are any indication.

    Talking Crotale in Saint-Dizier and Cambrai AAFB in the 80's

    These photos were taken at air bases during open houses. All in the Cold War, the French air bases were protected by numerous batteries of surface to air missiles and the Crotale was then a very modern weapon capable of inflicting damage to red star Fighters... Moreover, this weapon was deployed many times in overseas Operations like Manta, Epervier in Chad, Desert Shield and Desert Storm in Djibouti, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. since 2001, as part of the fight against terrorism, the French Air Force Crotales were involved in the protection of all important events : NATO summits, the Pope in Lourdes, G8 in Evian ... One might think that with the disappearance of the risk of a major conflict, such weapons would no longer be useful ... They have never been used much that in recent years...

    The Crotale has been regularly upgraded since its introduction in the early 80s, Crotale NG came to strengthen and now the arrival of the SAMP/T ASTER in ground based air defence squadrons will allow them to confront all modern air threats

    The upper hull is rather AMX-10-ish, but the suspension seems to suggest otherwise...
