Marines with 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, scan the area around them for any evidence from their prey during a combat hunter course Jan. 28.
Footprints and skid marks are just one of multiple ways a tracker can identify whether or not someone has recently been through an area. Marines with 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, received the combat hunter course Jan. 28, a requirement for all units that will be outside the wire while in combat.
Sgt. Kyle O. Kerr, a combat instructor with Advanced Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry West, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Calif., breaks a stick to show one of the ways a tracker can identify whether someone has recently been through the area during the combat hunter course Jan. 28. The ends of a stick will show dirt from sitting over time, while a fresh break is much lighter and clean.

Video of Marines of Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines have been operating in the upper Sangin valley for three months. When they arrived, Marines say they couldn't move beyond several hundred feet from their post before being engaged by Taliban fighters. Over their time here, they have expanded that security zone, but they still meet the Taliban almost daily in fire fights. In this video, Marines are seen patrolling, scouting, searching for IEDs, shooting at Taliban fighters and searching compounds. 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines is based out of Camp Pendleton, Calif.
