    I <3 floats also.

Not much for the USMC side to do other then watch the Sailors work. We pretty much stayed in our berthing areas most of the time sleeping until morning, noon, and late chow. If you don't time it correctly, you will literally wait a good hour in line for chow, ships store, barber shop, laundry, gym, etc. Navy shower is rinse, lather, scrub and rinse once more. Liberty Ports are OUTSTANDING! But that's a whole different story of its own. If we were allowed overnight Libo, I would always splurge at a 5-star hotel.

If you haven't spoken to the prior service recruiter, inquire if he has a billet list for upcoming floats that will accept augments on TAD or ADSW orders. You might get an opportunity to go on either a WESTPAC, MEDFLOAT, UNITAS, etc.

All I can say is I was glad I was a Cpl when I deployed for UNITAS. Lcpl and below had rotations on mess duty, mostly in the scullery cleaning pots and other nasty shyt.

Working parties to store ammo aboard the ship weren't fun either, but other than that the Marines don't do much while underway.

Are 1st Sgts ground only types? I've never seen a 1st Sgt except in MCT. Never heard of one for a squadron.

I'm unsure if I asked before... but which one did you participate? I was there for 2004, with 1st Plt.

First Sergeant have a command responsibility while Master Sergeants have technical responsibilities. So yeah, mostly with Ground Combat Elements.

All Grunt companies have a Company First Sergeant. Dont know how the chain of command works in the non grunt units. Above the platoon co we have a Master Sergeant, 1st Sergeant, Company XO and Company CO.

    What's your MOS?

When I was in it was CO, XO, Co. 1st Sergent, and Co. Gunny. Those are billets and they dont really have to be that rank to fill that role.

Not always that uncommon. My Plt Commander was a Gunny, always far more squared away then the 2nd Lt's running about.

And as previously stated Company Gunny can is a billet not the rank. My Company Guns was a Ssgt until we got back stateside.

My company XO was a Warrant Officer, which was a bit weird.

My platoon commander is a Staff Sergeant, and it won't change before deployment. And I'm very grateful for that considering the number of BLTs we have running around our battalion.
