Default M1 Abrams Losses In Iraq

Does anyone have a figure on the total number of M1 Abrams tank that were lost in Iraq? That is written-off/destroyed, not those that were damaged and repaired/rebuilt. I've looked around and can't find any documentation with the totals.

    Ballpark guess, 5 +/- 2

Just kidding, I have no idea. They probably wont publish it for security reasons.

Depends, doubt theres any definitive open source. We've gotten much better at recovering and depot rebuilding so hulls that in 91 were total losses can still serve today. IIRC, even the hull with the turret seperation was rebuilt though it needed a new floorplate

However, there is one for GW1 losses by serial number out there.

I found this .pdf released by some think tank highlighting equipment losses in Iraq, I think it was published around 2007 or 2008, I'll try to find it.

*Edit* Found this, hope it helps. http://www.americanprogress.org/kf/e...t_shortage.pdf (Go to page 10). Published in 2006, so it could be short a few M1s. Though, I doubt that many were lost between 2006 and 2009, they were used far less.

if anything, id say more were lost/damaged due to accidents, not enemy fire....like there was that crew that drowned in a river when the tank fliped

I think I've seen one Iraq video of an M1 hitting a huge IED.

Quite saddening to watch really. RIP.

There is problem with M1's losses because only ones that are written off are thouse that were tottaly burned by internal fire.

Tanks after huge IED's are... partially written off, that means only hull, turret is repaired from minor damages and get's new hull (new produced from GDLS low rate production or upgraded one from the old basic M1's or M1IP's, turrets from these variants aren't upgraded, no such possibility, GDLS just produce new turret's from what I know).

How many were taken back to US for repairs or writting off (and been melted) about 100-150, but probably less than 50 were really written off (turret and hull).

Of course reality can be different, these are only my thoughts.
