    Default PBY Catalina

    I have always been interested in the PBY "flying boat" used by the US Navy in WW II. Does any country currently use or manufacture anything similar or has the helicopter taken over it's role?

    Most modern application of the flying boat would be the Shinmaywa PS-1/US-1 that the Japanese use for SAR duties. Here's a link to the basic specs on the Shinmaywa: http://http://www.flugzeuginfo.net/acdata_php/acdata_us1_en.php

    I believe some Catalinas are used by the U.S. Forest Service to fight forest fires.

    Canada is still building the Bombardier 415 MP for fighting forest fires and mairitime surveillance.

    The final assembly is done at a hangar near my campus. Pretty cool seeing them before they have paint on them during their run up tests. A few of my professors work on them when they aren't teaching.

    There are two Martin Mars, the largest operational flying boats ever built, still in existence. They are owned by a company called Coulson Flying Tankers and based on Vancouver Island in Canada.

    PBY Catalinas no longer meet regulations for forest fighting, thanks to some new rules by ... Park Rangers?!? It happened one or two years ago.

    The Canadair CL-415 having turboprop engines (instead of radial piston) still qualify, and is the closest you'll ever find to a PBY. It's nowhere near as sleek as a PBY though. Ironically, Canadair took over the Vickers plant after they stopped building PBY's under license for the US, after WW2 ended.

    The USCG (USA Coast Guard) used them during WW2 and 10 years afterwards, but they were all replaced by smaller seaplanes, and eventually by helicopters: landing a seaplane out at sea proved to be too often risky, and today's divers can very well meet the needs.

    The Russians experimented (and still do) with jet powered seaplanes, but they are not likely to come up with a cost effective model.

    The be-200 is plenty effective.

    A company recently restarted the production of the 1930s-vintage Grumman Goose seaplane. They are offering a modernized version of the Goose made of composite materials and with new engines and modern avionics.

    Several Commonwealth nations used them as well. In Canada, many were built under license by Boeing Canada (most supplied to RAF and RNZAF) and Vickers Canada. We called them the Canso.

    The current issue of Classic Wings has an article about survivors down under.

    With 6 in operation, versus 190+, twice the price tag, having to drop the flaps to 38 degrees to slow down (would you want to operate a jet at 98 mph with full flaps?!?), I think that the point is made: turboprop is the way to go, for this type of task

    The PBY Catalina can be seen in the movie "Always" (w/ Richard Dreyfuss, John Goodman). There are still a few operational units out there, including the Netherlands, Australia, and of course the USA, but mostly for memorial flights. The radial piston engines is why there are so few left; these engines require extraordinary maintenance.

    Thats awesome! Though Im not a big fan of the new engines, the just look weird. Anymore info on the SF version?
