Its great to see farmers being well organised. Small town cops are generally incompetent layabouts who can provide very little help.
But dont you see, this self-sufficiency, ability to operate independent of the government is what they fear the most?
How close together are the farms in SA usually? Are they close enough together, that if farmers wanted to form some kind of defense group or militia, that responders could get from one farm to another in case of emergency or attack?

Logistics is a problem, no matter how you look at it. Farms usually a pretty distance from another, plus, since they are often caught unawares, they won't always be able to call for help.
Would it be possible for farmers to pool resources and maybe have a group of armed men go on patrols?
I wonder maybe if emergency sirens could be used to warn other farmers that a farm is under attack, a fellow in my county had riged a tornado siren up to motion sensors so when he goes to bed if anyone crosses onto his lawn it woudl go off of course the country put an end to it, but I wonder maybe if the general idea could work in South Africa?
There is a concerted effort by the government to disarm the civilian population (most privately held firearms being owned by whites - blacks struggled to licence them under apartheid), and they've also disbanded the Commando units (which provided security in the farming areas), promising they'd be replaced by a dedicated Police unit, which never materialised.
Basically, the government has gone out of their way to ensure the farmers (and citizens in general) can't resist their comrades when they come to redistribute the wealth, and they apparently don't mind killing the goose either.

Clarens - Another farmer has been attacked in the eastern Free State - the fourth since July.
Eddie Cressy, 65, was overpowered by four men in his house on the farm Beginsel near Clarens on Heritage Day.
Police spokesperson Majang Mosupa said one of the men pressed a saw against Cressy's throat while another shoved the barrel of a .22 rifle into his mouth.
They demanded money.
Mosupa said Cressy didn't have any cash on him, and as a result the men kicked and hit him before fleeing in a taxi.
It's believed they crossed the border into Lesotho.
The only thing the robbers stole was a camera.

A few years ago my friend Günther of Plaatjan farm along the Limpopo RSA/Botswana border was shot through the window. He was permanently in touch with other farmers by SW radio, but it proved useless.
