I really enjoyed Black Hawk Down. It is my favorite movie, and it is special to me because I want to be a US Army Ranger. I'm starting my quest in a few months, when I join the US Army. I hope to be able to put my knowledge to work, gaining more knowledge!
I need to go rent that movie "Winter War", as I am a Russian "stuff" collector and Mosin Nagant collector, plus I am impressed by the Finn's incredible resilience under such extreme pressure, against so many Russians.

well, it depends how you define "war movie". does it only play in a war setting, or is it about soldiers going to war?
apocalypse now, platoon, full metal jacket, thin red line are all artistic attempts to describe the horror of war (the horror! the horror!). i enjoy watching these movies a lot.
three kings, the pianist, steiner 1 are also some favorites of mine.
black hawk down, we were soldiers, et al are action movies in a war setting. bhd is cream of the crop, but just as an action movie. life is not an action movie. movies like these can be dangerous for naive people.
i did see hamburger hill once, but can't remember if it was good or bad.

Do you guys know of any MODERN US MILITARY MOVIES? Black Hawk Down is probably the most popular.... Im not talking OLD wwii/vietnam/civil war stuff.. The ones I've seen so far are:

Clear and Present Danger(More politics than action, but the "less than 15 minutes" of action is worth to see the entire movie for the light infantry recon squad, I think the movie sucked compared to the book becuase the action in the book couldve been made into a BHD type movie)
Anything else? Remember.. MODERN US MILITARY, dont even count action movies like matrix or swat movies

I forgot to add Tigerland to my list, and while it may not be the most technically correct movie ever made, all hale Top Gun. It has to be one of the greatest films, military, action, whatever genre you choose, of all time.
There are so many good movies out there from any country. One that I'm almost ashamed that I forgot is the Red band of Courage.
Ok, it is an Black and White movie, made in 1950. But so what? It is still a very good movie. Though I know all you Americans know this book/movie, maybe some of the "foreigners" doesnt. I really reccomend this movie., due to the fact that it tell us an important story about human behaviour in time of dire stress. Here is a short summary:
"Based on Stephen Crane's classic novel, this is a story about a frightened boy, Henry Fleming (Audie) who went into battle and came out of it a man with courage. He's really scared on the inside but talks tough on the outside. He finds that being in battle causes him to panic and run away. He sees his comrades wounded and regards them in an envious way wishing that he too had a red badge of courage. He gathers back his courage and leads the men on an aggressive attack carrying the colors. He is later recognized by the general for leading the charge. This movie was directed by the legendary John Huston who insisted over the protests of studio executives that Audie play the lead role. This is one of Audie's finest performances. "
