Man fights off tiger attack in Malaysia: report

A 47-year-old tribesman gathering food in a north Malaysian forest fought off a tiger attack armed only with a rock, a newspaper reported Saturday.

The attack in the jungles of Perak state Saturday left Yok Meneh with a wide and deep gash on his back and injuries to his hands and legs, the Sunday Star newspaper reported.

Yok Meneh told the newspaper he had been collecting wild green beans and other vegetables when the tiger attacked him.

"I was so engrossed in collecting petai (green beans) that I did not notice the tiger had crept up behind me," he said.

"The moment I realised I had to save myself I tried to grab anything I could with my hands. I found a rock, grabbed it and fought back, hitting the tiger on its head again and again until it slunk away," he said.

"Bedraggled and bleeding," Yok Meneh was found by his wife, who with the help of workers from a nearby oil palm estate took him to hospital, the newspaper reported.

In 2008 Malaysia unveiled an ambitious "National Tiger Action Plan" aimed at doubling the number of wild tigers in peninsular Malaysia to 1,000 by 2020.

Malaysian tiger found dead after attack on tribesman

    2010-02-08 17:40
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8 (AFP) - A tiger which injured a tribesman in northern Malaysia was found dead with gunshot, spear and snare wounds inflicted before the weekend attack, a wildlife official said Monday.
Shabrina Shariff, wildlife department director in Perak state, said seven men from one of Malaysia's indigenous groups had admitted injuring the four-year-old male tiger in an attempt to trap it before Saturday's attack.

"The carcass of this lovely animal is right in front of me. I am in tears. I love tigers," Shabrina told AFP.
"We will submit a report to the prosecution for action," she said, adding that the men faced five years in jail if found guilty of trying to poach one of the world's most endangered species.
She said the tiger was the same one that injured Semai tribesman Yok Meneh, who fought off the animal armed only with a rock when he was attacked while gathering food in a forest in Perak on Saturday.

The attack left 47-year-old Yok Meneh with a deep gash on his back and injuries to his hands and legs, a local newspaper reported.
"The tiger is a reclusive animal. It would have not have attacked the man if it was not injured," Shabrina said.

She said the tiger had been caught in a wire snare but escaped as the poachers returned to kill it with a gun and spears. It was left with a serious leg wound that had become infested with maggots.

Loretta Ann Shepherd, a coordinator with the Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers, called for swift action.

"It is a sad way to welcome the Year of the Tiger. The authorities should prosecute those responsible. Let it be a lesson for other poachers," she told AFP.
Conservationists last month called for a war on the poachers who are undermining Malaysia's ambitious goal to double its population of wild tigers to 1,000.
With 2010 declared the Year of the Tiger according to the Chinese zodiac, experts fear there will be a surge in tiger poaching.

In the 1950s, there were as many as 3,000 tigers in Malaysia but their numbers fell as the country opened up more land for agriculture.

^It's a pity we are damaging the animal populations with our unnatural population growth. Tiger is perfectly capable and well evolved creature who would be thriving without us.
I think the tiger would be one of my favourite big cats, lovely markings on them. What a shame to lose them.

    X2.

That it had to go hunt a human because it was so badly injured is a sad reflection on us humans. We really need to buck our ideas up as a race and start looking after the wild life and their habitat or else the futures going to be ****ty bleak for us all. I for one cannot imagine a world without an animal as beautiful as the Tiger. It would be like Great whites going extinct in the oceans... totally utterly soul destroying.

    don't mess with malaysian tribesmen

peninsula nativepeople become the core of malaysian special force and in borneo they become the foundation of royal ranger regiment

rip to the tiger though.but between a tiger and a human the priority is to the human

I disagree with you Ayanami. People are assholes, animals aren't. I'd shoot a human instead of a Tiger, any day.

Don't forget they asked for an attack by trespassing on the tiger's territory, and wounding him with a snare before he eventually got some small payback.
I'd have more respect for these tribesmen if they left the tiger alone.

Petai is not green bean, it is much more sinister.
