You should include a graphic warning.

Tough to see the pilot like that. Before his demise he was probably a star of his military and led a proud life. Quickly reduced to nothing.

According to the photographer (Mr Jahangir Razmi), the incident dates back to the early days of Iran-Iraq war on September 30th, 1980. Looks like somewhere on Southern fronts in Khuzestan province.

I can't help but feel sorry for the Iraqi pilots that flew the early MiG-23MS and BN Floggers during the early years of the war. I mean, the export versions were so downgraded, they didn't even have RWR equip. or basic countermeasures. The MiG-23MS interceptor had the same radar as the MiG-21 bis, and no BVR weapons like the later Floggers. Going up against the Iranian F-14s and F-4s, and facing the numerous HAWK batteries, they were massacred nearly every single time. They eventually got later versions (MF and ML) but they weren't much better than the original export Floggers.

I agree with the statement about the earlier Mig 23, however in good hands the later Mig-23 could do wonders, especially against American aircraft which did not have spares nor a steady stream of A2A missiles.

Rest In Peace to the fallen.
