I know this is a pic thread, but I did not want to start an entire new thread just for one question:

Prior to the service entry of the Harpoon, what was the US Navy's primary means of attacking naval targets?

Torpedoes, Tarter, Terrier, Talos (and carrier aircraft of course).

Why did they wait so long for a dedicated anti-ship missile?!

The aircraft was the primary strike tool via carriers...but what were the planes expected to use against enemy ships?

Planes used thing like LGBs, Walleye, Maverick, HARMs, etc. I remember an old piece of HARM artwork that showed it taking out the radars on a Russian Kresta II class. Presumably the HARMs would take out the ability to guide SAMs and then planes would come in closer to finish the job with guided bombs, stand-off bombs, Mavericks, etc. There was also Condor in the works (think Brahmos in speed and warhead size but shorter range and MUCH smaller missile) but they cancelled it.
