Default Algeria to get 38 Pantzir-S1 AA complexes

38 Pantzir-S1 AA complexes worth at least $500 mln will be delivered to Algeria in 2010-2011 due to contract signed in 2006.

UAE (50) and Syria (36) became byers of Pantzirs earlier, complexes already delivered.

Also 20 of Pantzirs will be delivered in Russian military during 2010.

15 mil per unit for short range AA is not that much of a bargain (one can buy an Abrams tank platoon with that). But I guess it comes with training, service, missile supply. Considering the customer, I wouldn't be surprised if Russian advisors had to be stationed with every division on permanent basis, just to keep it running properly.

So, Russian military will get 30 Pantsirs in this year? Sounds great. 1 battery (6 Pantsirs) for training center and 4 batteries (1 batalion, 24 Pantsirs) in combat unit.

I think 15 mil $ for 1 Pantsir is not that much. How much cost Crotale-NG, which is the nearest western equivalent to Pantsir?

I don't think there is an equivalent to Pantsir in NATO. NATO has either long range AA or ultra short range AA systems. Pantsir has almost double the range of low end AA systems used in both CSTO and NATO countries.

Pantsir doesn't have a real equivalent anywhere, because it is gun and missile system and even designed as a pure SHORAD it have a missile range of 20 km, what is actually medium range SAM like BAMSE or ASPIDE. I think the nearest equivalent SHORAD is Tor-M2. Crotale-NG is the nearest western equivalent to Pantsir, because it is the same class of SHORAD with search and tracking radar, day/night EO system, radio guided missiles, etc. I would like to know what is the price of Crotale-NG and that price to compare with Pantsir price.

I doubt the Crotale can be used as a ground support platform

I don't know the price of CROTALE.
I don't think it is in the class of Panstir. It is more comparable to the OSA (SA-8).

Pantsir is a class for himself. When I talk about classes of SHORADs, than I mean two classes. One class of Shorads have search and tracking radar and radio guided missiles as OSA, Roland, Crotale, Tor, etc and maybe ADATS with laser guided missile The other class have passive IR guided missiles like Strela-10, Avanger, ASPIC, Spyder, etc. Crotale-NG, not Crotale, is the latest and most capable western SHORAD in that class, that is why I would like to compare it to Pantsir or Tor-M2 by the price to see which have higher price and what you get for the same money.

Is the Algerian military all that bad? At least they keep they keep themselves to 2-3 arms suppliers.

Is Tor-M2 in production? Will Russia export Tor-M2 also? I think export trials between those two systems could be quite interesting.

^^ Supposedly Venezuela bought Tor-M2 with those modernized Pechoras, BUK-M2 and Antey-2500.
