My village lies on the flight path to the Army bases in Munster and to Hanover, so sometimes get lucky enough to see them when I am at home. I am never fast enough to get a picture and the trees don't help.

Are you sure about that ?

AFAIK, Tornados will still be used for strike. They are currently being upgraded under the ASSTA 3 program which in fact add new ground attack capabilities to the Tornado such as the integration of the GBU-54 LJDAM dual-mode PGM.

Correct. 85 remaining Tornados shall be upgraded to ASSTA 3.0 until 2018 and remain in active service beyond 2025. This will include IDS, ECR and Recce aircraft, afaik.

Are F-4 Phantoms still in use?

The last are/were flying with JG 71. They will be phased out with the JG's transition to the EF2000.

I have read that the upgraded ECRs will also be able to use the LJDAM which will add more flexibility to the Tornado fleet. Neat.

    May I introduce:

KMW's FLW 200+. It's a Rh202 20mm MK with 100 rounds of ammo (station, optics, weapon, and ammo: 400kg), here mounted on a Boxer. Absolutely nice!

Nice! Heavy firepower in a compact turret. That thing looks 1/4 the size of the other common IFV turrets. I suppose that's for export only? Or has the Bundeswehr expressed any interest?

I don't know about any interest from the Bundeswehr, but using the Rh202 sure is a good idea. With the outphasing of the Marder IFV, quite a few Rh202 should become available. I think it's a good (and cheap!!!) alternative to Rheinmetall's RMG and would close a gap between 12,7mm M2, 40mm GMG, and 30mm MK (to be used in the Lance-RC turret).

News channel N24 has a worthwhile documentary about the Marder infantry fighting vehicle.

That was at the very least what I had last heard about the plan. They could have changed the plan with the Eurocrisis.

Ambush! The Bundeswehr (and US Army units) trains how to respond when being attacked by IEDs and irregular forces at the Infantry's School at Hammelburg:
