Default Russia to test new model of Kalashnikov assault rifle in 2011

State tests of the new model of Kalashnikov automatic rifles will be held in Russia next year, Izhmash Director General Vladimir Grodetsky said on Tuesday.

The new model of the legendary assault rifle, the AK-200, is based on the AK-74M and differs in weight (3.8 kilograms/8.4 lbs vs. 3.3 kilograms/7.3 lbs) and the magazine capacity (30, 50, 60 rounds vs. 30).

The AK-74, a developed version of the Kalashnikov rifle's first model, the AK-47, was introduced in 1974 and used by the Soviet forces during the Afghanistan conflict.

Whatever happened to the AEK-971 and An-94? Those two rifles looked damn good.

the FSB and the MVD (Ministry of Interior) already began purchases of the new AK-200....

just how new the new AK is remains to be seen of course as artjomh pointed out before

I've heard that the AN-94 was monstruosly hard to deassemble and to clean, but that's all hearsay. And the AEK-971 is just plainly unergonomic.

    EDIT: disregard above

Does anyone knows about the AEK-971 version featured in BF Bad Company series? It looks nothing like the real and it features a completey different design.

Too expensive and difficult to maintain in field conditions for your regular grunt.

I don't really see what exactly is the pressing need to replace AK-74M as the standard army service rifle. Will it have (or need) higher rate of fire? No. Will it be cheaper? No. Will it be (or need to be) more accurate? No. Will it have (or need) longer range? No.

Sure, equip special forces types with all the whiz-bang automatic rifles, but why would a grunt need anything more than an AK-74 is beyond me.

Makes me wonder: Mikhail Kalashnikov never made money out of the rights of his creation. How is he standing, from a finantial point of view?

They were very good, but they did not provide a large enough advantage over the AK-74M to warrant the price of re-equipping the army with them. I expect this AK-200 will be either cheaper or better than those two examples, which will make it feasible to equip the army with them.

He isnt driving around in a Ferrari, but he isnt homeless and starving either. He gets a fairly good state pension, due to the awards he has and his status as a WW2 veteran.

Kalashnikov as commie as that sounds))) never really cared about profiting financially from AK IMHO.... that was not at all his primary motivation... he's been neglected in the 90's but since Vlad the Impaler rose to the throne he's been well taken care of... but certainly still from being considered rich by Western standards
