Syrians eating snakes, scorpions and drinking blood of puppies (for real)

Haven't posted in the forum for a while... But I bumped into 2 youtube videos that were rather disturbing. It is something I thought was an urban legend, but it seems it is (or was) true, that Syrian commandos eat live snakes and drink blood of puppies. That was too sick to believe... But here it is (I won't embed since images are very very disturbing)

Does anyone know answer to these questions:
1) What in the world would be military value of such "skills"?
2) Is it still being practised? I can see that it is Hafez el Assad sitting there, not Bashar, so they are old videos...
3) What kind of psycho would proudly post that on youtube, and what kind of psycho would leave comments praising this horror as proof of their manliness and toughness? Is it a cultural thing I don't get?

Sneaker eaters is also a term applied to other people in other military units. Survival skills, when you need to survive in a hostile environment, people do eat some interesting things. There are a lot of places there are no groceries stores. Maybe look at jungle survival, one gotta be really hungry to eat that stuff.

Well the eating of scorpians and snakes is just plain barbaric to say the least. However the drinking of puppies blood (newborn preferably and after they're washed of course) seems quite a natural thing.

I would not necessarily agree with you. While fighting in jungles, like in places like India, snakes could provide a good source of nourishment in a jungle survival scenario. Maybe scorpions also.

Puppies was most disturbing part... I understand when someone is hungry, he will catch something, kill it and eat it. But why alive animals? And why do that on a demonstration, while Syrian president approves? And why puppies, while screaming like Conan?

I have a feeling that those guys learned all they know from Johnny Woo/Chuck Norris movie villains. Politician agenda (global domination) sounds more like James Bond villain/Spectre master plans, except that they don't have so cool lairs, and don't have the style, culture and intelligence of guys 007 had to deal with. I would take Auric Goldfinger's gold cutting laser over Uddai Hussein's wood chopper any day.

Seriously, sometimes I have a feeling Israel has to deal with cartoon characters...
