Somali Islamists kill two football fans for watching World Cup matches
Islamist militants of the Hezbal Islam rebel group have killed two football fans and arrested ten others after attacking a house where fans were watching the World Cup game between Argentina and Nigeria in the Huruwaa neighborhood north-east of the capital Mogadishu on Saturday.
Residents say that heavily armed militants stormed a house where football fans were secretly watching the match, which has been prohibited in the Islamist-controlled regions in Somalia. "Two young men who tried to jump over the wall were shot and killed while ten others including my husband and my teenage son were taken to Islamist custody in the village" Halima Ahmed, a mother of five children said in a telephone interview with APA on Sunday morning. Islamist militia leader Sheikh Mohamed Abu Abdalla said that those in custody have broken the law and will be dealt with in accordance with Islamic law.
Prior to the World Cup opening, the Islamists in Somalia warned people against watching the matches, saying that it was not compatible with Islamic law and that those founding watching football will be brought before Islamic courts. "Football descended from the old Christian cultures and our Islamic administration will never allow watching it. We are giving our last warning to the people," Sheikh Abu Yahya Al Iraqi said, while addressing crowds in the Suqa Holaha village north of Mogadishu, hours before the World Cup kick off on Friday. The president of the Somali Football Federation Said Mahmoud Nur who was reached for comment while in South Africa, declined to comment on the matter because of security reasons.
Meanwhile, residents in the southern Jubba regions have sent a complaint letter to the Al Shabab administration in the regions demanding permission to watch the world's largest sporting event. Reports say that representatives from the community including elders went to the Al Shabab administrative office in the southern port town of Kismayo Saturday requesting permission to watch the World Cup, but they were denied and told that they will be arrested if they ever again come with such demands.
In 2006, the Islamic Courts Union who were then controlling most of Somalia banned watching the World Cup, describing football as a "satanic act" and as a result, two football fans were also killed and scores arrested in the city of Dhusamareeb in central Somalia when heavily armed militants raided a cinema where they were watching a World Cup game.

That is horrible. RIP to the innocent.
Eff Islam.
Islam is totally incompatible w/ civilized wester society.
You're generalizing.
These are thugs rationalizing their authority based on religion.
Your comments would be akin judging Christianity on the actions of Jim Jones, David Koresh of the Branch Dividians or Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints (poligamists).
My sincerest sympathies to fellow football (soccer) fans.
RIP
That's their interpretation of Islam. Iraq has a good soccer team and did pretty well after they were liberated post 2003.
Regardless, this is sad, muslims should be very angry that this happened because this is not what Islam is all about.
What do the Islamists expect Somalis to do, to pass the time? Pray twenty four hours a day? They've already banned just about everything worth doing over there. Next thing you know, they're going to outlaw spaghetti, as a corrupting Christian culinary influence.
Fight, negotiate who will rule what area and what people, commit war crimes, fight some more, eat, Pray when your off the drugs enough to care about religion... that kinda stuff I guess.
My feeling is that As-Shabaab use religion as a convinient excuse, you'll have your die-hards at the fighter level, but the command level are just power brokers, looking for territory and profit, not the expansion of their glorious religion.
I do reckon this place needs to be cleansed. Is there anything of commercial value that would help say Western Governments into putting Western Military muscle into the place.
We wont go if we dont get anything out of it, thats Capitalism.
Spaghetti - Italy - Rome - Vatican - Pope... you see what I did there.
Spaghetti should be banned by any self respecting Wahabist Regime...
Well, then there are the Religious police in Saudi Arabia. Where you pretty much cannot do anything. They are Islamic (cant kiss a girl in public? Have to have a woman walk behind you?).
Then there is Iran, who (although, may not undermine their people), would love to see the destruction of Israel.
Then there is the current beheading of those 3 catholics in the Philippines, done by Islamic Militants.
Then there are the Islamic militants in Southern Russia which have caused a lot of headaches, and killed a lot of children (Beslan).
Then there is the Gaza strip, with the Hamas in power (an Islamic group), who constantly hides behind women and children before and after launching rockets at Israel.
Then there are those morons who go around and have a flag (of their host nation they are living in) burning because they disagreed with said country over the dealings with Israel, or because of the current war (forgot the message about the "Behead those who insult Islam").
Then what about the Mohamed picture? What about that film director who was stabbed a couple years ago?
The list goes on.
I am sorry, but day after day, reading the same crap over and over again about Muslim terrorists this and Militant that, I am starting to wonder, is it really that peaceful of a religion?
It all could be a guise. Use religion as an example to rule people, but that obviously gives it a bad name. If people tend to follow it, then it is their doing (the believers) that makes them have a bad image (and ultimately) destroys Islams image.

^^^ Good post sepheronx
And I would like to add the violence perpetuated by Islamists in Kashmir and all over India, the killings by Islamists in Yala, Southern Thailand, the killing of Nuban Christians in Sudan, the recent massacres of Christains in Nigeria etc etc
The list can just go on and on.
But ah well some people can live in denial.
What the fvck has religion to do with football?
