This is the only photo I have showing me in the jungle on an operation. The PRC-25 was heavy and I had to carry extra batteries (large and heavy), C-rations, my M-16, ammo, smoke grenades and misc gear. The thought of carrying my heavy old Polaroid camera in the field made me tired. I had enough weight already, so this was taken by another member of the platoon.
Anyway, an hour after this photo was taken my platoon (3rd Platoon, Co. D, 4/47th Inf Bn., 2nd Bde (Mobile Riverine Force), 9th Inf Div.) was wiped out. There were four of us who were still ambulatory, got patched up by a medic and finished the mission. It was a river ambush and we later found out that we had run into a special heavy weapons unit trained and equipped in North Vietnam to try and cripple the Mobile Riverine Force. We actually ended up putting a serious crimp in their asses and didn't hear much more from them.
