In practice, it is actually a lot more tolerant than the somewhat-deserved (historically) stereotype.
Case in point are the obnxoius ultra-orthodox hasids walking around and being goofy/loud/absurd, and the only nasty comments within earshot all seem to come from the non-religious jews in the vicinity (ok, ok the non-religious jews in the vicinity actually consist of myself and I)![]()
