This is Thomas Friedman. "Chinese are coming, Chinese are coming" is his Thing.
Not that I am dismissing his arguments, but that's a very typical article for Friedman.

"China is doing moon shots. Yes, that’s plural. When I say “moon shots” I mean big, multibillion-dollar, 25-year-horizon, game-changing investments. China has at least four going now: one is building a network of ultramodern airports; another is building a web of high-speed trains connecting major cities; a third is in bioscience, where the Beijing Genomics Institute this year ordered 128 DNA sequencers — from America — giving China the largest number in the world in one institute to launch its own stem cell/genetic engineering industry; and, finally, Beijing just announced that it was providing $15 billion in seed money for the country’s leading auto and battery companies to create an electric car industry, starting in 20 pilot cities. In essence, China Inc. just named its dream team of 16-state-owned enterprises to move China off oil and into the next industrial growth engine: electric cars. "
Considering the stupid stuff we've squandered hundreds of billions on to buy votes this is just plain depressing.

Instead of complaining, I suggested to my kids to learn Mandarin. Well that or Spanish.![]()
Seems to me he's saying something worth listening too. I've known him to be spot on a lot of the time. Considering the state of America I think we should start teaching our children Chinese. Not that I am dismissing his arguments, but that's a very typical article for Friedman.
You just gotta roll wit it, we in the UK have had to watch the Labour party take a big steaming dump on us and now the Conservative / Liberal coalition have unzippered and are now urinating all over us all reported 24/7 every minuscule soundbite of it. I take the news in but barely ever react to it these days and life has become much better.
China can at least get to the Moon. NASA ist Kaput unless they're reaching out to Muslims
Thing is, it's when it becomes "meh" that things keep on going on as-is. It's not until people get seriously pissed about it and stay pissed that there comes a chance for real change. As much as I hate what's going on in this country these days, if everybody just accepted it that would be worse.
why is there this obsession with "if they are doing it, we must too"? Shouldn't NASA decide on its missions based on merit regardless of whether some other country is planning to do a similar mission? I think in the end its still a **** measuring contest anyway you look at it, rather than an actual security threat.
