Default On patrol to Yaklengah in southern Afghanistan - 2007

A group of five cows, three sheep and a dog, all being herded by a boy of about 15, pass by as heavily laden soldiers with the most modern of weapons and armour, make way.

The patrol stops on a hill to wait for pick-up, nothing better than the sound of your ride after a patrol.

Looking north from the defensive position, nothing can compare to the towering mountains that descend to the 'green zone', a lush strip of dense vegetation feeding off the Tiri Rud.

Default Special Forces Direct Recruiting Scheme – 2004

Recruits from the Special Forces Direct Recruiting Scheme (SFDRS) were fired on from above and below during a live fire bunker assault in Singleton on 2nd December 2004. Fighter jets (F/A-18s), armoured personnel carriers (APCs), machine guns and explosives unleashed simulated fire on the recruits as they attempted the assault as part of their selection to join Australia’s elite Special Forces.

With only six months in Defence, the SFDRS recruits successfully achieved their mission using live ammunition with small arms (M4 and F89) and grenades. This was the last major test for the recruits before the successful members are posted into Special Operations Command.

Thanks for providing those excellent pictures, vor033! I especially liked those of the Australian Abrams tanks.

Personally, I find this thread one of the most interesting around here.

Lt Charry? That was kept bloody quiet. Another one of the long term digger mafia turned dark side. 3 years ago, I suppose he'd be a Captain now.
