In light of the fatal attack on an Australian Federal Police officer, the Australian Defence Force has deployed a rapid response capability to demonstrate its ability to deploy at short notice.



The rapid deployment group is based on an infantry company of approximately 100 personnel from 3 Brigade in Townsville and will reinforce the military component of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI).



The strengthened military presence will support police in carrying out their work to complete the restoration of law and order in the Solomon Islands.

An Investiture Ceremony was held at Campbell Barracks, Swanbourne, to award a Victoria Cross for Australia to Corporal Benjamin Roberts-Smith VC, MG on the 23rd of January 2011.

Corporal Benjamin Roberts-Smith VC, MG of the Special Air Service Regiment was awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia for his gallantry under fire during operations in Afghanistan in June 2010.

Present at the ceremony was the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC, Prime Minister, the Hon. Julia Gillard MP, Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Julie Bishop MP, Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston AC AFC, Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie AO DSC CSM, and Special Operations Commander Australia, Major General Gus Gilmore DSC.

The Victoria Cross is Australia’s highest military honour. It is only awarded to those who display the most conspicuous gallantry and daring in the face of the enemy. Corporal Benjamin Roberts-Smith VC, MG becomes the 98th Australian recipient of the award and the second recipient of the Victoria Cross for Australia since it was instituted in 1991.

Ben Roberts-Smith is like poster image of an iconic warrior, and now he has entered SASR and ADF legend. Can't respect the man more, even if I'm sure he would say he was just doing his job. Still it's amusing how small he makes everyone else appear, lord he's a big bloke.
