Defence staff told to fake security checks

Three former Defence Department staff say security at Australian military bases and embassies has been massively compromised by a deliberate fabrication of security clearances.
The whistleblowers have told ABC1's Lateline that they were given direct instructions from senior Defence staff to fabricate security checks on civilian and military personnel.
They say the fake security clearances have left a gaping hole in Australia's national security.
Monica Bennett-Ryan, Janice Weightman and Owen Laikum worked at the Defence Security Authority (DSA) in Brisbane between 2009 and 2010.
The DSA is an arm of the Defence Department responsible for conducting security checks on Australian military and Government personnel.
The three former staff were employed through a labour hire company as "co-ords", which involved checking documents supplied by people who had applied for a security clearance.

Soldiers' manslaughter court martial called off

The case against two Army Reserve soldiers charged with manslaughter in Afghanistan will not go to court martial.
The soldiers, identified only as Sergeant J and Lance Corporal D by order of the judge advocate, had been charged with manslaughter and, in the alternative, two counts of dangerous conduct, with negligence as to consequence.
The charges related to an incident in which six locals, including five children, were killed by Australian troops in Uruzgan Province in February 2009.

They should've kept some SLR's just for ceremonial use.

Funny lots of old timers said the same about the SLR in British service and how we should have kept the Lee Enfield for ceremonial however I think the SLR looked smrt and buissness like on parade (mind you looking at need for 7.62mm semi auto marksmans rifles forAfghanistan wouldn't it be better if all riflemen had a 7.62mm rifle like the SLR!)

thats why looking at weapon systems with interchangable calibres is starting to creep into the Aussie Army - finally
seems they dont want to give up the Steyr (probably cos of money) so we have 5.56 for a while, but we can look at things like the HK416 & 417 - same drills
Minimi and Maximi - same drill different calibre....

Hopefully the powers that be see the light soon enough and get the ADF kit that will make the transition from 5.56 to 7.62 quick and pain free.
