New radar system gives troops in Afghanistan vital warning time
AUSTRALIAN forces have a new high-tech radar warning system protecting their main base in Afghanistan amid a constant threat from rockets and mortars.
Sprawling coalition bases across Afghanistan are inviting targets for insurgents armed with Chinese 107mm rockets which they can fire from kilometres away.
The new system in place at the Australian Tarin Kowt base in Oruzgan province will allow up to 20 seconds of vital warning.

Australian military plans for invasion of Fiji and PNG

The Australian reported in its weekend edition that military strategists drew up detailed plans for the invasion of the island-states of Fiji and Papua New Guinea (PNG) as part of the Labor government’s 2009 Defence White Paper. The plans were part of a “top-secret Force Structure Review and analytic documents supporting it—which were prepared in conjunction with the white paper—and were presented to the National Security Committee of cabinet for consideration.”

Read the article again gentlemen, no one is getting a quarter million dollar bonus, they are getting paid removals. I imagine those expensive removals are for blokes coming from the UK, a removal from NZ would not be close to that money. Secondly these people are not pinching jobs off of kids on the street. Kids on the street do not have 10+ years experience in trades that we are experiencing a gap in. Neither of you two were Sergeants with Electronic Warfare skills for example. This constitutes about 1% of our recruiting for the Army, probably less, it's filling skills gaps, would you prefer that we had a less experienced Army?

I'm confused, whats the deal with the F90? I thought we were going to be using the EF-88 (which has been posted in this very thread). Which looks much similar to the F-88.

I read somewhere that the F90 is the EF88 but the export/commercial version. (which explains why it's black) I hope they change the flash hider into a more modern one though, that one was introduced with the original steyr aug in 1977.

I'm puzzled why the Sydney Morning Herald is over a year and a half late with this news...

Some serious stuff with islands falling to the chinese. They are pouring money and people in those islands to flip them over to China, not exactly difficult given their poverty and small populations. A military base there would be strategic coup for China, and only Australia stands in there way. They would be wise not to test our military resolve.

Certainly not, but I would also prefer that the Australian Govt, and the ADF spend money on skilling Australian citizens over paying for foreigners to come in and "save the day".

Same goes for the mining industry. But for sure, if they are talking about people with 10+ years of experience in a certain field/trade and there is zero chance of it being filled by an Australian, then sure, import. I just hope it doesn't become a regular feature.

Hawkei is looking really good. Definitely looks the part. If it's armour protection is as good as or close to the Bushmaster it's a no brainer.

Why does Mentoring Task Force get to wear multicam? I thought that was only for the special forces. And how big is that task force?

Interesting that they refer to them selfs as Combat Control Teams. Does that mean they share the same tasks? or is it just the cool name thing?

I think combat controllers are a special job, like a signaler or medic. Combat controllers are the guys who call in airstrikes and probably other precision ordnance. Here http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/airfo...batcontrol.htm
it says they also do air traffic control, and take 2 years to train. It's an elite position.

Like Digs said its not replacing normal recruiting streams, and if anything it would "Actually" save the ADF money. Think of how much money the ADF would've invested in producing a senior Cpl or Sgt in one of the mentioned roles or trades (recruiting, training, 10+yrs of pay/employment) this way they pay some resettlement costs and allowances (no F'n way as much as media's indicated) and get a trained experienced soldier for alot less outlay on the part of the ADF.

Lateral recruiting is old and common a hell. I've served with alot of Aussie's and Brits who've come as laterals to the NZDF.
