    Default Project Overlander

    Minister for Defence Stephen Smith and Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare today announced that the Government had taken the next step in the $7.5 billion Project Overlander that will provide the Australian Defence Force with around 7,500 new vehicles over the next decade.

    Project Overlander will replace the current fleet of Land Rovers, Unimog, Mack and S-Liner trucks and their associated trailers and modules.

    These new vehicles represent a significant increase in capability, replacing multiple vehicles fleets that have been in service since the early 1980s

    Near the end of the article on defense announces major army restructure it states ;

    ''The 2nd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR) will form the core of the Army's contribution to a future amphibious force capable of conducting humanitarian and disaster relief and other operations, particularly in the immediate region.''

    I thought 3RAR where taking on the amphibious role?

    In a lot of other articles regarding the amphibious role it was stated that 3RAR would be used.

    HMAS Choules to be commissioned

    The Royal Australian Navy ship HMAS Choules will be commissioned in Perth today in memory of the last known veteran of both world wars.
    Claude Choules was Australia's oldest man when he died in a Perth nursing home in May at the age of 110.
    British-born Mr Choules served in the Royal Navy during World War I and witnessed the scuttling of the German fleet at Scapa Flow.

    The Hawkei progresses... but not the Bushmaster ute.

    BENDIGO manufacturer Thales is a step closure to securing a $1.5 billion defence contract.

    The federal government announced yesterday that Thales’ Hawkei prototype had beaten two overseas light protected mobility vehicles during testing.

    Thales will receive federal funds to create another six Hawkei prototypes for the Land 121 Phase Four program.

    Provided both parties finalise contract arrangements by 2015, Thales will provide up to 1300 Hawkeis from 2016.

    But it wasn’t all good news for Thales yesterday.

    The government overlooked Thales’ Bushmaster utes for the Land 121 Phase Three replacement program.

    German company Rheinmetall MAN won that contract...
