    Vietnam demands release of fishermen

Vietnam has demanded the “immediate and unconditional” release of nine fishermen detained by China in the South China Sea last month, raising the diplomatic stakes in another territorial dispute in the area.

The Vietnamese fishermen were detained by the Chinese military on September 11 and later accused of fishing with explosives, the Vietnamese state news agency said.
The Vietnamese foreign ministry dismissed this allegation as “irrational” and said the seizure of the men and their boat “seriously infringed Vietnam’s sovereignty”.

China has seized dozens of Vietnamese fishing boats over recent years but Vietnamese officials, wary of antagonising their more powerful northern neighbour, rarely criticise China in such strong terms.

Seized Vietnam boat shows China double standard

The case illustrates "China's double standard when it comes to this kind of issue," said Ian Storey, a regional security analyst at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) in Singapore.

He said the seizure of "hundreds" of Vietnamese fishermen by Chinese vessels in recent years contrasts with Beijing's response to the September 8 arrest by Japan of a Chinese trawler captain. His boat collided with two Japanese patrol vessels near a disputed island chain in the East China Sea.

Given China's reaction to Japan, Vietnam's call for the release of its vessel will "show the Chinese as inconsistent," said Carl Thayer, a Vietnam specialist at The University of New South Wales in Australia.

all sides arrest each other in the south china seas due to so many overlapping claims, it's not just a china-vietnam issue, although vietnam seized the china-japan spat to further it's own interests.. pretty much the "Ball" is rolling and everyone is making a move

i think you read my post wrong .... there are more than just china versus vietnam fisherman arrests, all claimants involved are arresting each others fishing boats in a tit for tat more, this has been going on for years.. with the recent china-japan spat vietnam is taking it as an opportunity to portray itself in china role with the diaoyu island dispute to further their own claims to south china sea islands. Since the balance has been broken everyone in the region is making a move for its own interests as a result

I have NO idea where you can get "so vietnam provoked china into seizing the fisherman to make a point" from that

Sure must suck to be a prisoner used as a leverage tool for South East Asian political spats (and I mean that for all sides), and I notice that there's been an increase in them lately.
