I'm wondering why there was such a long pushback of the release date from fall 2011 to spring 2012.

I won't be playing Mass Effects MP. The first 2 games were STELLAR without it, just don't want them taking time away from the good stuff.

You dont need to play the mp in order to get 100% completion in the sp game. The mp is for the fools that can't be bothered to do the side quests to get the completion.

MacGyver here, my old account is temporarily buggered because of the forum hacking fiasco.

Yeah, I remember them heavily promoting the game earlier this year in preparation for the fall 2011 release but out pof nowhere it was pushed back to March 2012. Kinda got me wondering for a minute there.

You can probably thank the stupid addition of multiplayer mode for it

If your old xbox is totally toast, you're going to need a HDD transfer cable to do it, IIRC. You just stick the old drive in the cradle like end of it, and stick the USB end in the new xbox. You'll also need to transfer your licenses for any (marketplace) content to the new xbox to be able to use it.

The game was supposed to come out the same day as Skyrim, Bioware knew they couldn't get the GOTY awards going against Bethesda so they bumped it to march 2012.

Or, like 90% of games today, they underestimated the amount of development time they would need, and bumped back the release date to have more time to polish.

    Unlike Battlefield 3.

Actually its not the dev cycles get underestimated, its that publishers(such as EA and UBI) generally only give a studio 2 years regardless if the game is done or not. The Silent Hunter series was never able to release a completed game as UBI gave them a 2 year limit on all the games and cut the team to around 17 people.

Skyrim has been in Dev since 2006 if you watch some of the behind the scenes documentary vids that are getting released.

What is there so dramatic to "develop" ?

    - Game engine already exists
    - Textures already exists for the most part
    - "Universe" / Story line already there

The biggest issue with RPGs, especially ones as expansive as TES, Mass Effect, etc. is QA. With so many quests, characters, voice acting, and so on there's a helluvalot of moving parts that can easily break. An immense amount of time goes in to simply playing through every quest over and over and over to find as many bugs as possible to ensure simple playability. And despite this, you still get games where showstopper bugs are common at release.

I think you mis-read me. I'm saying that DICE/EA released Battlefield 3 when it was unfinished, trying to compete with MW3 for initial sales, instead of doing the intelligent thing and waiting until the game was in a proper state before going gold.
