The current Army Newsletter has it that LePzMrs Wiesel 2 - a Wiesel weapons carrier equipped with a remote controlled 120mm mortar - is dead. No more than the 8 existing systems will be acquired.
Agreed.
Then again it just seems the Heer wants to get rid of the 120mm mortars once and for all. In the future indirect fire support for infantry forces will be made available with 80mm mortars on company level and light handheld "rucksack mortars".
Funny. We just moved from the 80 to the 120 on a company level.
In my mind, that Weasel 2 was nice. Very deployable to a remote outposts. One, maybe two, in a C-130. It's lack of armor not necessarily a problem.
Especially useful with guided mortar ammo, I would think.

Given the way how the upper echelons have dealt with these things over the past few years I'd rather say there's the intention to have plans to buy new ones. I hear several systems undergo trials, such as the Hirtenberger handheld mortar, but no memorandum of understanding has been issued.
Interesting. Just a few days ago a buddy of mine told me he has a good chance of serving in the LePzMrs unit.
And now only 8 systems will be aquired? Pathetic to the max.
Well see it that way.. your friend would be part of a very small elite unit then![]()
Am I the only one who has the distinct impression our military/political leadership is afraid of firepower?
Maybe it's for the good. IIRC a link was posted here where a BW soldier was being very critical of the army's decision on mortars - retiring regular 120 tubes and criticizing the Wiesel's awkward loading, small capacity and proposed NEMO as a much more capable alternative. Of course, the big plus for the Wiesel is the air mobility.
Hm. What I've found was a November 2006 WHQ forum post critizising the Wiesel 2 mortar system, and an AMOS solution on GTK as well. But that's probably not the link you were thinking about?
Re: "Pathetic to the max" and "Maybe it's for the good".
I really like the Wiesel concept. Light armored, armed and helo transportable tracked vehicles, that is. Given this latest decision to procure just 8 mortar systems (which will end up costly!) I'm not sure whether the BW leadership knows what they are doing right now. It looks to me as if they are ordering, procuring and slashing numbers just for the sake of it - but without giving second thoughts to a broad future concept of the Wiesel carriers and FschJg as a whole.
Can this decision have something to do with Wiesel being a death trap? After all there is a reason why such vehicles were abandoned after WW2.
