I'm on the fourth book (Feast of Crows? Reading on a Kindle deprives you of looking at the maps and the back of the book with the house lineages, but then again I'm technically inept -- worst of all, I don't know the names of the books as I'm force-fed the text digitally). Simply a great series. Some good pay-offs when the real jerks get their come-uppance, and some shockingly bad things happening to the "good" people.

Anyone else think the food described just sucks? I recall my mouth would practically water while reading WoT, but the food in the Martin series always sounds just plain gnarly. Mmmmm...roast swan.

I gave A Game of Thrones a shot and was reminded why I don't read fantasy novels. I still plan to check out the HBO series, though.

    No. Sorry. Not done yet.

I'm close, though. Watch this space. When the book is done, you will read it here.

Meanwhile... there is news. Big news. The end is in sight, at long long last, and we're close enough so that my editors and publishers at Bantam Spectra have set an actual publication date.

A DANCE WITH DRAGONS will be in your favorite bookstore on

    TUESDAY, JULY 12, 2011

Yes, I know. You've all seen publication dates before: dates in 2007, 2008, 2009. None of those were ever hard dates, however. Most of them... well, call it wishful thinking, boundless optimism, cockeyed dreams, honest mistakes, whatever you like.

This date is different. This date is real.

Barring tsunamis, general strikes, world wars, or asteroid strikes, you will have the novel in your hands on July 12. I hope you like it.

(For what it's worth, the book's a monster. Think A STORM OF SWORDS.)

The dragons are coming. Prepare to dance.

    And hey... thanks for waiting.

I don't know, those Lemon Cakes that Sansa Stark seems to favour sound quite nice. I'm only a third of the way in to Storm of Swords, I love these books and cannot wait for the series!

Excellent. Firing up the Torrent machine as soon as I get home.

By the way, HBO have produced a viewers guide for people who may not have read the books, explaining the relationship between houses and covering various locations.

Dont know what to say. Seems ok to me, but some character design seems to be odd to me. As example the guy who trows boy out of tower just looks out of place, his clothes and hair just dont fit in. And why the hell do barbarians have mostly black women while being mostly whites themselves? They look more savage like or what?

He is a Lannister, they're very rich. It is no wonder he is better dressed than most.

Better? He wears clothes that arent even being produced in medieval fantasy. His leather jacket look way too modern to be pseudo medieval.

Just watched the first episode and I have to agree, looked out of place.
Haven't read the books, so I don't really know what's in store here, but it seems good so far. A hell of a lot better than the disappointing "Camelot" on Starz.
