I will check them out next time i'm at the store. thanks custodes
I read alot of the local stuff, i guess you can call that indie? But there is a good comicbook store in my town, much like the comic book guy from the simpsons if i tell him about the marvel comics you just said he will probably come up with a few. The only marvels i have read until now is Spiderman.
When I started reading them comics cost 75 cents - which is about a buck and a half accounting for inflation. They're up to, what, like $4 now? Kids can't afford that. The industry is going to be stuck with an ever dwindling customer base of aging 20, 30, 40 year olds.
They need to get those prices down if the industry is to survive I think. Print 'em on cheap newsprint if they have to and save the good paper for the TPBs
Well they call these things the D.C. Universe and The Marvel Universe for a reason. They are vast and have very long histories. You might just try to pick up a favorite character from the movies and start following it from there rather than by genre. Super Hero Books can move from Fantasy to Sci-Fi to Supernatural depending on the writer and artists and the "run" they are on. Try the complied issues though. Monthly books are a pain as you get older. Senility: One can't remember from month to month what happens.
JKD: 10 cents here.
They keep the books for the copyrights for movies and merchandise (much bigger profit there) and they sell books and hardcovers and then endless trade paperbacks. When the GL movie makes 800 million we will all see.![]()
Some initial examples from my childhood:
Corto Matese
Lucky Luke
Iznogood
I read many comic books, I have many and have many TPB's and graphics. Comics aren't just for super heroes, one of my favorite series is 100 Bullets and has no super powered anything. Will Eisner's [RIP] "Contract with God" trilogy is one of the best examples of the medium you may ever read. I go to comic conventions sometimes.
/the end
Time to let age rear its ugly head.
DC:
Our Army at War - Sgt. Rock & Easy Co.
GI Combat - Haunted Tank
Star Spangled War Soldiers - The Unknown Soldier & Enemy Ace.
Action Comics - Superman
Marvel:
Captain America.
^ All very good. I have a bunch of Sgt. Rock stuff (Just picked up Lost Battalion) and have most of the Haunted Tank collection.
$3 (depending on publisher) or so, the most vocal about the prices are the people who actually buy them. Lowering the prices won't bring more people in. the medium is stigmatized and Free Comic Book Day probably provides the best chance to get kids into comics. Trades also provide an alternative for parents if the kid does get into it, more than enough of them for younger readers. The people who make these books generally struggled in the past to make a living, today they can scrape up a pretty decent living if they do good enough and depending on the publisher(s) they work for.
Ralph Snart was a good one

I'm an avid comic book reader as well, though I tend to go for more alternative fare more than the mainstream superhero stuff. I also exchange comics with a friend, which covers the superhero bases.
Comics that I am currently subscribing to:
Fables (probably my favorite series)
Jack of Fables
DMZ
Preacher
Dark Tower
X-Factor
Deadpool
S.H.E.I.L.D.
Comics that have just concluded:
Star Wars Legacy
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
All-around favorites:
Watchmen
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
LOEG recieved the worst movie adaptation ever, or one of. Just started on Star Wars legacy and it is fun to read, Preacher I finished up a few years ago. I need to get back with Fables
Read the first X-Men: Age of Apocalypse
We will see what Moore does with the next chapter, 1969. His Cthulu book is supposed to be good.
