Colombian army hunts for Alfonso Cano. The New FARC Commander.
6000 men of the Colombian army are hunting Alfonso Cano, the new FARC commander in chief, in the mountains between Valle, Cauca, Quindío and Huila in the south of Colombia, Colombian newspaper El Tiempo reports.
The army is fighting a group of 250 guerrillas, according to the Army, part of Cano’s security rings. Aside the guerrillas, the soldiers have to fight the weather conditions too. The operation takes place approximately 3800 meters (12,500 feet) above sea level, where there’s heavy fog and almost constant rain.
“This is a ‘Cano’ has known for many years and allows him to to evade the military siege more easily, because of the many ways to escape,” a source of military intelligence of the Sixth Brigade told the newspaper.
“We can not create false expectations by saying that ‘Cano’ is here or there, but the operations are heading south of Tolima, on the borders of the departments Valle del Cauca, Cauca and Huila,” says General Jairo Herazo, commander of the Fifth Division of the army.
The army increased the intensity of the search three weeks ago and deployed an extra 3,900 soldiers in the region. Their orders are to defeat the 21st front and its columns, that directly receive orders from ‘Cano’.
According to military sources, the newspaper says, the 21st front has been receiving reinforcement from front 6, who were fighting in Valle del Cauca, implying the FARC are in defense.

Fantasma attacking FARC column.
get some!!
loads of good stuff in this thread.
How Hugo Chavez Courted FARC.
They called him "Angel." He was the highest-ranking outside contact for the Colombian guerilla organization FARC. More and more details are now emerging that demonstrate the close relationship between Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and the jungle terrorists.

The trio, who have been held hostage since 2003, were spotted by troops in the jungles a few months ago but conditions had made any rescue attempt impossible, authorities said on Monday.

Can you provide a link to where you got that quote? I would like to use it but my google-fu is a bit weak and cant find it myself. Thanks...
Onto the topic at hand, somewhat...
I would argue, based on having been there watching the entire thing unfold, that the condition(s) which made it impossible to rescue the hostages was incompetence in Bogotá and not some outside contributing factor....conditions had made any rescue attempt impossible, authorities said on Monday.
This was the closest anyone has been to the hostages in the 5 years they have been captives of the FARC and they slipped away due to several colossal errors in planning and execution of the poorly thought out plan. Suffice to say, we (Aglan and American forces) werent none too happy about it either... I will give the FARC this though, they are smarter than many give them credit for. Their tactics are evolving and their network extends further than it is thought to. Until the generals who sit in the AC in Bogotá allow the commanders on the ground the leeway to plan and conduct warfare based on the actionable intel they have this will unfortunately continue to be seen.
That said, the soldiers on the ground did a great job and as I have said before I am a better soldier for having spent time with them. They are professionals and I am happy to call them friend.

Lancero posted it in this past Monday's today's pics thread. If you PM Lancero he could probably tell you which news site it's from.
It's the last photo in this link. http://militaryphotos.net/forums/sho...1&postcount=40
