The Lancair T-90 Calima from the Fuerza Aerea Colombiana was another first of type for RIAT. Together with it being unique in that the Colombian Air Force is the only air arm in the world to operate the type, the Calima is also unique in that it is the first aircraft type to be assembled in Colombia. A modified version of the Lancair Legacy - a US homebuilt design, the 10.5M US Dollar contract was placed in 2009 for twenty-five kits, with the first aircraft taking to the air in September 2010. The type was delivered to 712 Escuadron Basico with the Grupo de Educacion Aeronautica at Santiago de Cali and replaced the older piston-engined trainers; the Cessna T-41 Mescalero and the Beechcraft T-34A Mentor.
