With U.S. founds, Colombia would train other countries in security
The country has trained about 11,000 soldiers from Central America who suffer from drug trafficking.
source in spanishAn item of $ 18 million from the Appropriations Committee of the House of Representatives of the United States to Colombia to train police and military in Central America and the Caribbean in the fight against drugs trafficking.
These resources must be approved by Congress, would become an additional aid that Washington delivered to Colombia each year and that by 2013, as proposed by the White House would be 330 million.
What the program is that Colombia seeks security, given the experience in the fight against drug trafficking, share their knowledge with other countries who are suffering this problem.
To date, the country has trained about 11,000 police and military in Central America, particularly Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala.
The Colombian government had insisted on this issue for two years, and last April, during the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, presidents Barack Obama and Juan Manuel Santos took it up. The leaders spoke of the terms, but not the funds to finance the program.
The US Goverment had provided some funding for this program (it helped to build an academy for training), but were minor and resources drawn from the regular support.
But additional resources for Colombia may be even more. The budget passed by the House includes an additional $ 30 million, compared with Obama's request in early-, so that aid would rise to 360 million in 2013. Army, for example, is elevated by 25 percent (30 to 40 million).
