I was lucky to get one on sale for less than 200 when it first came out. Bought the second one later, for about 170 used. Budget in my case, and works great. Whole system cost me around 1K after all together (deals and discounts I get for being a specific member to a specific company in Vancouver).
You're probably going to need something better than 8800's. My friend had those SLI for BC2 and it still ran meh until he just upgraded to a card that has 1GB DDR5 on its own.
Ah, gotcha. I have a 4890 right now which is a pretty stout competitor with all of these newer cards, I'm either going to get another one for crossfire or go with a single 6970, it depends on if Direct X 11 starts being used in games or not, the only drawback of the 4890 is that it can only support up to 10.1.
I have BC2 and they were ok. Not sure what to get. I have a dell 30 inch so I want somthing with a **** load of Vram.
I used to use the 9800GX2 (two of them shoved in one) but then upgraded to a GTX460 lately and the graphical improvement is amazing. Can run BC2 on all high with excellent FPS, the 9800GX2 would only work well on low settings. Might get another 460 to SLI, but I don't care so much about graphics, I'll probably end up playing on low since my eyes can catch better than with **** turned up to eye candy.

They said the PC version is being built to take advantage of DX11 so you might need to upgrade your video cards unless the game offers DX9 or DX10 modes
True dat^^^But seriously, this game is going to be H U G E! The earlier you get BF3 the better, this isnt one of those 'wait and see' games. I think there will be nuances and weapons peculiarities to learn quickly cause the amount of nubs who are going swamp this game its better to be the experienced predator whacking nubs left and right.
Still, this is an EA/DICE game and I bet there will be problems with all sorts of stuff.
