Anyone got any tips on painting large surfaces such as flags? I'm finishing off my command squad and I'm never particularly confident about how to shade/highlight large curved but mostly "recess" free bits of model

Subtly I'd say. I'm not good with flags myself, but with a large and only gradually curved surface the difference in shading between the highs and lows wouldn't be much.

For white I'd do a mixture of white and light grey in the recesses (80% white, 20% grey or so) and then maybe one or two layers on that with more white on each...

I quite often cheat with flags and just print them.

Create your own and print it?

That's what I ended up doing for my Fantasy Empire forces.

Light drybrush highlight should do the trick for a tabletop painting standard, you can also pick out the details (letters, laurels and other heraldry) afterwards with smaller brush. You could also try weathering powders to add subtle shadows to the deeper recesses of the flag, concentrating mainly on the bottom of the "waves" the flowing flag fabric creates. Weathering pigment powders are a great hobby tool and can be used to achieve many different effects both in infantry models and tanks alike. I highly recommend giving them a try!

I just wrote an army feature and added a ton of pics of my long time Space Marine army project! Finally got it documented into the blog!

khalifah! You're alive! How goes Space Marine, I mean US Marine training?

I have plenty of new stuff to put up, but the weather has been dark, gloomy and wet so no photos possible. I really must invest in a light box.

Five years in the making... yes, I'm in on and off relationship with this project and I bet it will be never properly finished. Haven't played 40K for ages but modelling part is still interesting from time to time... if I just have the time, that is.

    Thanks.

Started way back... ~25 years ago. Had a long break at one point but been building again bit by bit since 2005 or so. Got Flames of War and Force on Force stuff besides 40K material. Not interested in WHFB and would like to delve more to the historical side of things, but there's too many interesting periods to choose from.

Ah, meant different historical games and periods. I have small project with Imperial Romans planned, would also like to get some Indian Wars stuff and WW1 Middle East related things as well. Too many ideas, too many projects, too little time to fully concentrate on all of them.
