The majority of Syrians are Sunni muslims, and a big part of them have affinity for the Muslim Brotherhood. But the opposition includes many different political ideologies.

Russia likens Syria attack to 'real civil war'

MOSCOW: Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday that an attack by Syrian army defectors on an intelligence complex brought the nation closer to civil war and pressed Moscow's call for talks between the government and its opponents.

Lavrov urged "all states that are anxious for a peaceful outcome" in Syria to demand that both the government and opposition groups halt the violence and begin talks, which he said should take place at the Arab League headquarters.

"We see television reports that say some new force, the so-called Free Syrian Army, I believe, organised an attack on ... a building belonging to the Syrian armed forces," Lavrov said. "This is already completely similar to real civil war."

The army defectors fired machine guns and rockets at an Air Force Intelligence complex on the edge of Damascus on Wednesday in an assault that showed how close the popular uprising against Assad's rule is to sliding into armed conflict.

Russia joined China last month in vetoing a Western-backed U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Assad's government, saying it was one-sided and could have led to military intervention.

Moscow has urged Assad to implement reforms faster but says his opponents share blame for the violence, which the United Nations says has killed more than 3,500 people since a government crackdown on protesters began eight months ago.

Syrian authorities blame the unrest on "armed terrorist gangs" and foreign-backed militants they say have killed 1,100 soldiers and police.

"The violence in Syria is not coming only from government structures," Lavrov said at a news conference after talks with Indian foreign minister SM Krishna.

"There are more and more weapons there that arrive by contraband from neighbouring countries," he said.

Russia has close ties with Syria, which has been a big buyer of Russian weapons and hosts a Russian naval maintenance facility on the Mediterranean.

Syrian opposition leaders in Moscow on Wednesday urged Russia to call on Assad to resign, but Lavrov and a deputy told them they should enter dialogue with the government.

Homs: the story behind Mani's extraordinary images from the frontline

The Syrian government's violent and bloody crackdown against its own people has been mostly hidden from the eyes of the world. But this set of extraordinary images by French photographer Mani – he is not using his surname to protect his identity – provide a rare insight from the most dangerous frontline of the Arab spring.

The pictures, taken undercover in the Homs area, currently the centre of the uprising, show rebel fighters of the Free Syrian Army, night-time demonstrations, the funerals of victims and the anger and defiance of ordinary Syrians facing violent state repression.

Shots rang out at the Jordanian-Syrian border late Sunday as Syrian forces attempted to prevent civilians from entering the Kingdom, hours after an Arab League decision to impose sanctions on Damascus. Syrian soldiers opened fire on a married couple and their young child as they attempted to enter the Kingdom late yesterday near the Jaber border crossing, some 90 kilometres north of the capital, according to Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications and Government Spokesperson Rakan Majali.
Initial reports from civilians living near the border region identified the gunfire as clashes between Syrian and Jordanian forces, a claim the spokesperson denied.
The Syrian family arrived in the Kingdom and received emergency medical attention, Majali indicated.

The Arabs Gang Up Against Syria: Stop the Killing or Foreigners May Intervene

The Arab League tightened the screws on beleaguered Syrian President Bashar Assad on Sunday, imposing economic sanctions on Damascus just weeks after suspending its membership in the 22-state body. The questions now are: What more can the league do and how — and against whom — might the Damascus regime retaliate?
Indeed, the unprecedented move against a fellow Arab state came with a sharp warning to Syria: Deal with us or pave the way for non-Arab intervention. "If we, as Arabs fail, do you think that the international conscience will remain silent on this issue for ever? I don't think so," Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheik Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani told a press conference in Cairo on Sunday. Syria says "leave us alone, you're interfering, but they're not telling us how they want to solve this," he added. "All this work we're doing is to avoid interference, but I cannot guarantee that there will be none."

President Barzani supports democratic aspirations and Kurdish rights in Syria

“You must play your role very carefully and ensure that democratic values and Kurdish rights are recognized and guaranteed in the Syrian Constitution.

He also urged them to promote and support peaceful co-existence and tolerance among Syria’s various religious and ethnic communities, including safeguarding the rights of the Christian community.

MOSCOW (*******) - Russia opposes any imposition of an arms embargo on Syria and believes some countries should stop threatening Damascus with ultimatums, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday.
Proposals "to impose a ban on all arms deliveries are quite dishonest", Lavrov said, suggesting that in practice an arms embargo would cut off supplies to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government but not to its opponents.
"We know how that worked in Libya when the arms embargo only applied to the Libyan army, the opposition received weapons, and countries like France and Qatar publicly spoke about it without shame," he told a news conference with his Icelandic counterpart. Libyan rebels toppled Muammar Gaddafi in August.

Lavrov, alluding to Western powers and the Arab League, said it was time to "stop using ultimatums" to pressure Damascus and repeated Russia's calls for dialogue between the government and its foes, whom Moscow says share blame for the bloodshed.
"The longer what is happening in Syria goes on, the more it troubles us. For the most part, armed groups are provoking the authorities. To expect the authorities to close their eyes to this is not right," Lavrov said.
