Actually in some cases, Alawites and Sunnis are smuggling weapons into Syria together.... There was an instance like this a few days ago where they were caught.

Smuggled arms prime Syria rebels for new fight

(*******) - Newly armed with mortars, machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades smuggled across borders by truck and donkey, Syria's rebels are now ready to step up their fight against President Bashar al-Assad.

Rebel fighters say they have taken advantage of a shaky truce to regroup against a Syrian army that is showing signs of poor morale, desertions and equipment failure.

Thousand of shells and hundreds of sniper rifles, as well as anti-armor missiles, have been smuggled in via Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq in recent weeks, much of them from suppliers in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, fighters and opposition figures say.

Although the rebels say these additional weapons are not enough for them to topple Assad, they may have been a factor in the insurgents' announcement last week that they were abandoning the failing truce and resuming attacks on government targets.

"Now the Free Army has more sophisticated weapons. We still have less than we need but it is entering the country," said a fighter in the north-western province of Idlib.

"It still does not cover all we need because the number of fighters is increasing. Thousands of soldiers are still waiting in Turkey for weapons," he said.

Some areas are stronger than others, with Idlib province the best equipped and organized, the rebels say.

A car bomb exploded Thursday in a Damascus suburb that is home to a popular Shiite Muslim shrine, wounding at least two people, Syria’s state-run news agency SANA reported, while activists said regime troops continued shelling rebellious areas in central Homs province.

Syrian troops plant mines inside Lebanon, report

Syrian troops on Wednesday crossed into Lebanon’s eastern border region of Masharii Al-Qaa and planted mines around the home of a local resident before withdrawing, a security official told AFP.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the troops entered some 300 metres (yards) inside Lebanese territory and placed the mines outside the home of Mohammad Akeel.
It was unclear why Akeel was targeted.

The Syrian army has in the past planted mines along its side of the border but Wednesday’s incursion marks the first time it has entered Lebanese territory to do so.

Earlier Wednesday, Syrian troops also briefly kidnapped a Lebanese man during a cross-border raid in the same region, the official said.

Sadly, Russia is not very good in choosing her friends.

I wonder if these were coordinated with the Al Qaeda strikes in Iraq yesterday? Sure seems so.

U.N. Monitors See Vast Devastation in Syrian Village

    By RICK GLADSTONE

    Published: June 14, 2012

United Nations monitors in Syria reported fiery devastation, the smell of death, vacated homes, looted stores and vestiges of heavy weapons Thursday during a visit to what had been a Sunni-populated village besieged for days by Syrian forces and pro-government militiamen who said they had cleansed it of rebel fighters.
