Is the battle for Syria entering its final phase?

There is a growing sense that the scene is set for the coming, final, battle of the war to topple the Assad regime.

I recall months back, sitting with a glass of crisp Lebanese wine and some delicious grilled fish in Homs, in a restaurant full of military and not-so-secret police types, listening to Kofi Annan and the UN bang on about how Syria has reached a “tipping point”.

He was wrong. Wrong by several months. We said at the time it felt wrong. In the restaurant the military types shook their heads and smiled quietly. They knew. Everyone knew.

But fast forward to the events of yesterday. The UN evacuating all but “essential staff”. Given that the UN stopped any kind of monitoring months back, it isn’t clear what it means to be “essential” in Damascus now, if you work for the UN.

On the BlackBerry on which I write this, a message still sits from erstwhile government spokesman Jihad Makdissi, saying it would be good to meet for coffee next time I am in Damascus.

Jihad, we understand, is in London, as of yesterday. A Christian, I was told months back he’d already installed his family in the relative safety of Beirut. He has apparently been sacked. The reality is that he’s become the latest defector.

The internet is back up and running in Damascus, though it is erratic and increasingly so. Unexplained power-cuts of varying duration come and go.

The rebels are said to be massing in the northern, eastern and southern suburbs of the capital in greater numbers. There, they are bombed daily with attack helicopters and fixed-wing MIG fighters.

    New Syrian Emails Hacked

http://www.propublica.org/documents/item/522212-syrian-flight-manifests (Flight manifests for flights between Moscow and Damascus)

The leaked flight manifest refers to "30 ton" of banknotes. That is a US measure. Russian and Syrian usage is the metric system - "30 tonne" or "30,000 kg." US aviation practice is to list weights in pounds, esp. fuel load and cargo load.

Well it might be officially "tonne" for metric tons.. but many just use ton.. even us continental Europeans... because everything is metric here.. so often there is no need to specify that... and if you are not really in the import/export business.. a ton is a ton - and who knows who filled out that form

Moscow will not interfere with Turkey’s right to self-defence, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said after the Russia- NATO Council meeting in Brussels.
He said that Russia did not object to the deployment of Patriot missiles close to the Syrian border but Russia believes that the danger should not be exaggerated.
This seems a bit of a change of stance over the last few weeks of Russia saying it opposed deployment of Patriots to Turkey now they are saying they do not object to them, cant help but wonder if it has anything to do with Russia being shown or themselves detecting evidence that Syria is readying its chems for use..

Perhaps the Turks gave some assurances that the Patriots won't be used to establish a no-fly zone over Syrian airspace?

The wording of the Russian statement is the key; they speak about Turkey's right to self-defense in deploying the Patriots, which I suspect is what the Turks argued that they were doing, nothing more.

Syrian rebel group to get terrorist tag from U.S.

WASHINGTON -- In an apparent bid to isolate Islamist extremists and bolster a new Western-backed Syrian opposition alliance, the United States is moving to declare one of the most effective Syrian rebel groups a foreign terrorist organization because of its alleged ties to al Qaeda.

The State Department originally planned to add the Nusra Front -- Jabhat al Nusra in Arabic -- to its list of international terrorist groups this week, McClatchy Newspapers learned.

The announcement was postponed, however, as officials discussed how to get the maximum impact from the designation.

The designation now is likely just before the U.S. and its European and Arab allies meet with leaders of the new opposition alliance at a conference Dec. 12 in Morocco, where a significant aid package for the new alliance is expected to be announced.

The impact of the terrorist designation for Nusra, whose members have been at the forefront of many of the rebels' most recent victories, remains unclear.

Many rebel sympathizers said they were concerned that the designation would make it impossible for rebel groups to coordinate in their fight to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad.

"Many groups labeled by the administration as al Qaeda are actually not. What is the reason the U.S. administration is considering it [the Nusra Front] al Qaeda? All of our focus is on getting rid of the Assad mafia. We welcome anyone in the fight against Assad," said Radwan Ziadeh, the executive director of the Washington-based Syrian Center for Political and Strategic Studies.

So Assad was right after all.. . he claimed from the very start weeks of the uprising.. that terrorist were killing civilians and their families ,usually government supporters but also his security officials and western media always blamed Assad for all civilians crimes. Just Wonder how the Syrian Army are supposed to know the difference between Terrorist and Saudi Arabia/QATAR/NATO "democracy fighters" ? since both use machine guns and rocket grenades. mmm..

here are videos that shows the real face of FSA .

Egypt's Mursi leaves palace as police battle protesters

(*******) - Egyptian police battled thousands of protesters outside President Mohamed Mursi's palace in Cairo on Tuesday, prompting the Islamist leader to leave the building, presidency sources said.
Officers fired teargas at up to 10,000 demonstrators angered by Mursi's drive to hold a referendum on a new constitution on December 15. Some broke through police lines around his palace and protested next to the perimeter wall.
