Russia has no plan to build aircraft carriers before 2020: minister
MOSCOW, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Russia didn't plan to build aircraft carriers before 2020 but was going to further develop its Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile, Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdykov said Friday.
    [...]
So far, no money has been allocated for aircraft carrier programs until 2020, Serdykov said, adding the ministry "does not quite understand so far" what the future warship should look like and what its capabilities could be.

They can still allocate the money in 4 or 7 years if they feel the need, it's not like anyone is forbidding them to do it. They just have not until now, they could still do it whenever they see fit, i.e. if they suddenly see a need or get a good design.

Major thing holding them back is the shipyard. Currently Sevmash may be the only one capable, and if the recent deal with South Korea is true, then it could be very much ready to build a carrier. Problem is, the need of one and the ships to escort it.

If that is the case, is there any specific reason as to maybe why they did not upgrade the radar? Unless they are just going for what is cheaper now, to make way for newer jets in the future :-/

    Thanks for the info.
Honestly, i don't even understand why they bought 12 SM3's. I mean, 12 for god's sake. It is nothing. The only logical use i can imagine them having is kind of trainers for Su-35S, although Su-30M2's are supposed to take that role. I would rather see those money go to upgrade some MiG-29's into SMT's.

Kilos are good subs. Too bad they can't get the problems with the Lada class figured out.

How much was the upgrade (if you know)? Because I agree, why did they bother if they are to replace the aging Su-27 with Su-35/30? What exactly is going into the Su-30M2 as well? Because if it is to train pilots, I figure it is strange since Su-35 is a single seater and not dual seater? I though Su-30M2 was more or less to accomodate the lack of Su-34's and to have a more true multipurpose plane? And I agree with the Mig-29 statement. Either replace the planes or upgrade them, because they are not in the best shape currently.

From Yefim Gordon book Russian Air Force , these 12 Su-27SM3 are new airframes which were suppose to go to Chinese but the deal didnt go through and they are being converted to SM standard.

Another thing mentioned directly quoting senior Russian Air Force official , is that the Su-27SM though retains the original radar but has many new features and can virtually use all the armament , plus the official mentioned that SM upgrade were superior to MKK and MKI using best of both the system , it says the upgrade cost them almost 1/4 of the cost of these types but offer superior capability.

With the radar used? I thought the N001 series where lackluster and Pero/Bars was supposed to fix that issue? And the Su-30MKI uses the Panther (bars) radar!

Su-30M2 is basicly a Russianised Su-30MKI , it will have BARS and other Russian system. The use as mentioned by Yefim is to train the crew of Su-35 and to use it as Multirole aircraft.

From Yefim Book " The combat potential of Su-27SM is increased by 60 % over non-upgraded one ............................ modified N001 radar can perform ground mapping in actual beam mode ......detecting ground target with high radar signature at 100 km , large surface ship at 350 km and small ships at 120 km.............. plus many details as far as armament goes....max armament load of SM is 8000 kg"

to add further from the book

The then Russian Airforce C-in-C Army General Vladimir M Mikhailov said "The Su-27SM fully meets the requirenment applying to present day military aircraft. It has a designated service life of almost equal to that of new build fighter but comes at approximately 1/7 th of cost. Yet the upgraded Su-27SM can match the capabilities of latest aircraft and if you'll excuse my saying so , excells the Su-30MKK and Su-30MKI taken collectively ! This is because we incorporated the best features of those aircraft into the Su-27SM. That is what i called optimum upgrade !"

Regarding Su-27SM3 upgrade this is what in mentions

    " Su-27SM3 - a far more extensive upgrade then the 55 operational Su-27SM fighter modified during 2003-2009.

Unlike the Su-27SM the Su-27SM3 is powered by AL-31FM1 ( AL-31F Srs ) engine rated at 13,500 kgp in full afterburner and extended service life.

Another important difference is that the Su-27SM3 has a more upto date avionic suite a full glass cockpit with no backup mechanical instrument.

It can carry more more advanced weapons than the earlier aircraft , In late September 2010 an Su-27SM3 made the first sucessful launch of an unspecified upgraded AAM . The firecontrol radar antenna , radar set and data link channel has been modified to enable guidance of the missile at longer range "
