You are making it sound like a no-brainer and a done deal. When in fact it is a dodgy idea is unlikely to be implemented or worked on. That's my opinion.

Lord Arty has a point as always. The radar wouldn't have the range to fully utelize the R-77 to begin with probably.

TBH, I'd have much more faith in escorts with area SAMs than 2 or 3 helicopters playing CAP.

And the missile range will suffer as well when not launched from a fast moving jet.

Of course it is, I am just saying that the radar is powerful and advanced enough to be able to employ those kinds of missiles. I don't know if everyone else here is spoiled, but that a helicopter has a radar that will probably have the same range as a fighter aircraft (Mg-23/Mig-29) 25 years ago, instead of the usual 5+km's that helicopter-integrated radars usually have up until now, sounds pretty amazing to me.

Russia’s Air Force to Get 180 New Aircraft by Year end

The Russian Air Force will receive some 180 brand new planes and helicopters by the end of the year, the Air Force Commander in Chief Major General Viktor Bondarev said.
The country’s air force has already received several new Sukhoi Su-34 Fullback warplanes and will get another 12, along with Kamov Ka-52 Alligator and Mil Mi-28 Havoc helicopters, as well as trainer jets including 15 Yakovlev Yak-130 Mitten aircraft, Bondarev said in an interview with the Ekho Moskvy radio station published on its website on Friday.
The aircraft to be supplied to the air forces will carry advanced navigation and other equipment and weapons “of significantly higher quality,” he said.
Last year, some 120 new aircraft have been supplied to the air forces, he added.
On Sunday, Russia will mark the 100th anniversary of the national air forces.

300 new planes and helicopters in 2 years is really not bad. Quite a force. How many planes and helicopters on the other hand are retired in the same time?

The initial concept for LAMPS called for SH-2 Seasprites to have a ship defense role, armed with AIM-7 Sparrow missiles.
This was never done in operational service however.

I don't know how many are retired, as AF does not publish this data.
According to my data current Active AF numbers are as follows.
    Fighter/Attack:1180
    Heavy Bomber:199
    Airlift: 240
    Tanker:19
    Special purpose (Recon,C&C,EW,Elint):180
    Utility/Misc:165
    Trainer:~220
    Helicopter:~920

Navy has - 225 active all types of aircraft. It was announced that it will start getting more aircraft under current program.
Other branches have insignificant ammount of aircraft like Strategic Rocket Forces have a couple of An-72 and some number of Mi8 etc.

Only 19 tankers? Ouch. For having second largest airforce, they should have more tankers than that. What about AWACS?

RuAF doesn't run that many away missions to justify the large tanker fleet. They are mostly used to refuel bombers on training and patrol, and this number seems sufficient so far. Of course, if the number of long-range missions is to grow, so will be the tanker fleet, but so far there seems to be no immediate plans for this.

Seems like more delays with first Yasen due to reactor not generating enough power and noise specification not being met , the new torpedo is still not ready.
