T-50 or PAK FA is more or less a testing unit of newer avionics, engines, and airframe with radar absorbing material, etc etc. It is possible in the future that the avionics on PAK FA could make its way to previous gen fighters to give them the capabilities to combat newer jets, and stay cheap(er). Like Su-27SM2 to use Su-35S avionics like Irbis-E radar, or possibly using a Zhuk-ASE AESA radar and having l-band antennas on wing(s) for VLO engagement, etc etc. This would give new life to older jets and even open up market for countries that do not have the coin to purchase PAK FA's. But eventually, Russia would have to replace its aging fleet of Mig-29, Su-27 and Su-24. Purchases of Su-34, Su-35S, and Mig-29SMT is going somewhat slow (since Su-34 recently hit the serial production line, while Su-35S has not(as far as I am aware)), while Mig-29's seem to be phasing out (shame really, as the newer variants like SMT and 35 are true multipurpose aircrafts). It would actually be much cheaper for Russia in long term to acqurie PAK FA (like USA with F-35) in order to maintain only one specific type of multipurpose aircraft, rather than having to maintain (logistically more specifically), various types of aircraft.
A banhammer in his future I see xD
Na, I am still hard pressed to imagine that to be anything else than a joke. I mean it was such an utterly predictable stab at the emotional sore that is the "Russia-Strong" crew, it can't have been serious. Maybe he'll comment on it, I am looking forwad to it.
And you guys thought I trolled you
Then again, what could possibly be worse is Emissary is actually completly serious
We must change history books now guys - Soviet Union liscensed the J-11 from Glorious People's Republic of China.
God, next he's gonna say we copied the Blackhawk from their copy.
Installing Irbis-E into standard Su-27 frame takes a lot of modification. First, it has bigger diameter, and second, it needs a lot more power.
A think you mean SM3, and not SM2. Best summary is found here:
http://www.take-off.ru/news/107-news...-27sm3-02-2011
Regarding radar on SM3, it appears to be somewhat modernized, but it doesn't appear they have Pero. I don't have anything more specific than that sadly.
U.S. ready to provide Russia with missile shield details
The United States is ready to provide Russia with technical specifics of interceptor missiles of the European missile defense system, Russia's Kommersant daily said on Monday, citing U.S. sources.
The newspaper said Russian specialists were invited to take part in tests of RIM-161 Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) and visit the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) headquarters at the Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado.
"During the consultations [U.S. Undersecretary of State for Arms Control Ellen] Tauscher said Washington was ready to provide information about the missile's speed after it uses up all of its fuel. This information, referred to as burnout velocity (VBO) in international documents, helps to determine how to target it," Kommersant said.
In October, Moscow's NATO envoy Dmitry Rogozin said Russian talks with the United States on missile defense had hit a dead end.
The Kremlin says the U.S. expanding anti-missile system in Europe is a potential threat to Russian nuclear arsenal, while Washington tries to convince Moscow that the system poses no threat to Russia and is needed to protect against missiles that could be fired by countries with smaller arsenals such as Iran.
The missile shield dispute between Russia and the U.S. has undermined efforts to build on improvements in relations between the former Cold War foes and is intensified by Russia's uncertainty of U.S. policy after the November 2012 presidential elections.
Yes, I recall reading about the issues, and the cost would have been significant. But was an option (or so I heard).
If that is the case, is there any specific reason as to maybe why they did not upgrade the radar? Unless they are just going for what is cheaper now, to make way for newer jets in the future :-/
Thanks for the info.
