Really? The outcome would have been worse. Any Westerner would have been kidnapped and held hostage until OBL was released. It would cost more lives to have captured him than to kill him.

The fact that UBL (according to reports) died near the end of the firefight...gives me a little glee, as at least it was not so quick, and he had time to contemplate his demise, and also to realize that he was being taken out by the US military (rather than the Saudis, or some other group that hated his guts).
Well said and a fact overlooked by many. He would have been died nonetheless, whether he was armed or not. Obama wanted evidence and visual confirmation and he went about it the right away. I will rail against Obama all day long on a lot of issues, but he got this one right.

The only clumsy thing is initially saying he was armed and then backtracking. It was a military operation and it isnt necessary to say anything at all regarding that fact. The WH should have formulated a statement, posted some proof of his death and let the speculation run itself out.

As Dave said though, it's irrelevant. For many anything the US does is wrong, America and Americans have to have a thick skin.

Personally I don't care if he was shot while surrendering, or running away or putting up a fight. He got what he deserved and the symbolic value for the American soul of him taking two to the face is worth any intel or silly trial that may have come had he lived.

Roger. Not worth the risk of the crazies blowing up buses (as said earlier) or trying to hijack airlines etc. The security that would have been involved would have been ridiculous.

With that being said, everyone is making comments based on assumptions, his resistance could have been a knife, it could have been a gun on the bed, it could have been rushing the soldiers, there is no telling what it was, too boot, the order was to kill. Good riddance, no need wasting money on a jack ass that everyone knew was guilty.

There seems to be a lot of "should've, could've, would've"s going around.

Now I think you're making comments based on assumptions. The 'kill order' was yesterdays version. Today's version is that they were to 'capture if possible'. The folk in charge don't even seem to know what's what so there's no way us armchair forum commando's are going to.

No, I am taking my info directly from the very top source, not advisers, not PR guys and not random reports.

    On rules of engagement:
BRIAN WILLIAMS: Did the President's order read capture or kill or both or just one of those?
LEON PANETTA: The authorities we have on Bin Laden are to kill him. And that was made clear. But it was also, as part of their rules of engagement, if he suddenly put up his hands and offered to be captured, then-- they would have the opportunity, obviously, to capture him. But that opportunity never developed.

Kidnapping a non citizen of a country whose sovereignty you have violated in undertaking the operation in the first place, without permission. I wouldnt want to deal with that legal nightmare. Neither did the administration. It was a kill mission and nothing more.

Arrested? This guy was not your local around the corner criminal, you are talking about the head of Al Qaeda. Put yourself in the shoes of the Navy SEALs; you have Osama in front of you in his backyard and he is doing strange things what would have you done? Mind you this is his house he knows every little corner and whatnot.

As a taxpayer in America I would have been real angry if they brought him to the states and jailed him in our jails.

Every twisted bleeding heart armchair general is now lamenting the way SEALs killed that pos. They shouldve done this, they shouldve done that, thats not 'justice', we know what 'justice' means, Americans dont.

He was shot in front of his daughter boo hooo, while I, and millions of New Yorkers watched our fellow citizens burn into ashes because of what that scumbag did

That German FM needs to learn when to talk and when to STFU. People start commenting on a situation that is completely within a fog, start saying stupid things because they think they are more righteous and more moral. This is a total delusion of grandeur, a moral weakness of the highest order. This is deluded masochism based on a twisted and impossible definition of 'justice'.

we have slain our Hannibal without apology or lamentation.

Most people will forget about "how" he died in 2-3 weeks when the next big ticket news items rolls around. No one is about to change their opinion of the US based on whether Bin Laden was armed or not. He's still dead, the US still wins.

You're saving much more than just tax dollars. Dead men don't talk.

Speaking of dead, until we have irrefutable proof, we can only speculate.

If Osama wasn't dead he would say so.
