    He was the youngest pilot in US Navy history (served the navy during WWII, he was around 18 at the time)
    Shot down by Japanese AA gun, jump off torpedo plane, almost dead then rescued by submarine

    he flew 58 combat missions for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Air Medals, and the Presidential Unit Citation awarded to San Jacinto.
