Type 053H2 Jianghu-III, it's armed with x8 C-802 missiles so it can pack a punch if need be.

It does resemble 1960's style Communist bloc frigates though cause the original Type 053 design was derived from the Soviet Riga Class.

Does China have ANY indigenous weapon systems that are not "derived", "based on", "originate" or just blatantly ripped off from other countries? Jets, tanks, missiles, machine guns, etc etc. I'm genuinely curious here.

Well to be fair the original Riga Class and the current fleet of Type 053's are quite different, the Chinese ships obviously have way more sophisticated systems and weapons then the original 1950's-era soviet ships and can do stuff like fire ASM' whereas the Riga's were just for patrol/ASW duty. It's just originally it was a derivation. China has retired all of its pure Riga copies since the 1990's I believe.

As for truly indigenous weapons I can think of off the top of my head: YJ-8, YJ-7, YJ-6 series Anti-Ship Missilse, Type 88/Type 77/Type 85 Machine Guns, QBZ-95 Assault Rifle, PF series Rocket launchers, Type 022 Houbei Missile Boats, WS-2 MLRS, WZ-10 attack chopper, their various IRBM's/ICBM's (though initially this did rely heavily on Soviet support). The Type 96 & Type 99 MBT's seem to be pretty indigenous too, though I've heard that there may be tech from the T-80/T-84 in there. But yeah, China and reverse engineering are pretty well-known for a reason and most of China's best tech seems to be derived from foreign systems.

WZ-10 is similar to Eurocopters Tiger.

..and yet it is a hugely capable naval vessel compared to anything the Philippines can send against it.

This is a good news. Let China run wild in South China Sea, and this makes it easier to persuade countries to form an Anti-China security alliance.

They are sending ships from the 60's to deal with ships from the 40's. I'd say China is still on the up and up on this Chess match

What most of my countrymen are not realizing is this recent actions by China, might have something to do with the Philippines actions of modernization. After all why not set the end game now when the enemy is still down, than when the enemy is more capable. I would do the same thing.

On the back of my mind, given I've seen what the Chinese government has given the Armed FOrces of the Philippines in terms of engineering equipments and offer of weapon sales, plus the wiki leaks conversation between the Us and China about my country, it wouldnt be surprised if the Chinese officials are helping their Filipino counterparts help get their modernization a booster shot.

Just a backgrounder, all pushes for modernization get more accelerated in the Philippines when there was a threat from China, from the 90's onwards. Without that threat congress and the senate would just rather the AFP languish on the sidelines. Now given the ambitious modernization that the Philippine Armed Forces are putting in motion, they need a threat to get justification. That planned Multipurpose Vessel for the Navy, is hanging by a thin thread last year in terms of funding and being cut... lo and behold the Chinese have started acting up... guess what, its budget approval season in the Philippines.

This is a very disturbing incident sinced shots were fired towards the Philippine fishermen, it was a good thing that it did not hit them or things can escalate rapidly in the 'Western Philippine Sea'...
