Default Israel, US to hold massive missile defense drill next year

    By YAAKOV KATZ
    07/26/2011

Exercise aimed at improving operational coordination between countries’ defense systems in face of Iran’s continued pursuit of nuclear weapons.

    (…)

Called Juniper Cobra, the exercise will be held in early 2012 and will include the Arrow 2 and Iron Dome as well as America’s THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) and the ship-based Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System. The exercise will likely include the actual launching of interceptors from these systems.

    (…)

Frank Rose, the US deputy assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of Arms Control, Verification and Compliance, said the US planned to deploy another Aegis missile defense ship in the Mediterranean Sea alongside the USS Monterey, which is already deployed in the region.
He also said said the US was looking to deploy an advanced X-Band radar – similar to the one the US gave Israel in 2008 – in southern Europe.
“Together we can work to protect what our adversaries would put at risk, both now and in the future,” Rose said. “Our mutual commitment to cooperation on missile defense research and development, on deploying proven technologies and weapon systems such as the Arrow, and on gaining operational experience through joint exercises and training, will go far in enhancing Israeli security and our mutual interests, and in further cementing and expanding our partnership.”

Ramati said at the conference that Israel is speeding up the development of the Arrow-3, which is supposed to serve as the upper tier missile defense system against Iranian long-range ballistic missiles.
The Arrow-3 is not expected to become operational until 2015 and the Defense Ministry will hold a first flight test of the new missile by the end of the year.

Meh, i would prefer our forces do our own defence. I dont want to rely on arms that are not under our control.

Will never happen. Israel is one of the few U.S. allies that isn't under the American defense umbrella, mostly for political reasons. The Islamic world/left would throw a tissy if there was any indication the U.S. would defend them.

It's better not to rely on anyone. By 2015/2016 Israel will fully deploy her missile defense systems.

All the current US sources on the issue are repeating that it was cancelled over Iran. At the time, however, US news sources were full of how Israeli PM Netanyahu was 'upstaging' President Obama both in Israel, and with the US Jewish lobby. Politics, however, had nothing to do with it.

The 'scenario' for the defense exercise remains a US assistance after a first strike on Israel by an unnamed, but ICBM-armed regional enema. This will involve 'simulated missile attacks' to test the interoperability of US and Israel anti-missile systems. All very cinematic.

An alternative 'scenario' would have involved a full-scale, joint strike on Iran, which would have involved the more mundane vict'ry parade, with flowers and cake for everybody.

Did they detail what type of cake? I'm a sucker for chocolate but cheesecake is also fine IMHO.

The US Senate passed legislation Friday to enhance security cooperation between Israel and the United States.

The measure, which passed by unanimous consent with 69 senators as co-sponsors, calls for the strengthening of the two countries’ bilateral relationship by increasing coordination in the fields of missile defense, homeland security, energy, intelligence and cyber-security. It also seeks to improve Israel’s qualitative military edge, a long-time stated goal of American foreign policy.
