Australia has a similar programme, they recruit soldiers from overseas and they are eligible for citizenship after 3 months in the regular army. In fact, they must apply for and accept citizenship as part of the deal.
It's how I became an Australian

You need to be equivalent in rank and training to one of our Sergeants or Captains and you must have a trade that we require. If not you need to immigrate on your own steam and enlist like a normal Australian.

I personally don't have a problem with foreign nationals serving in the US military, and IMO, they should be allowed to expedite the process of becoming a citizen.

I served from '71 til '91. And I served with many immigrants. Most of whom became citizens. The most squared away sailors I ever worked with were from the Philippines.

This program is nothing new. Just a little tweaking of old policy.

General gist of it is that you will have to make your own way to the US, get permanent residency off your own bat, then enter into the military under your own steam. Not an easy process.

    Default Join the army?

Is it possible for an Austrian to join the army when you are in the US?
I've heard of some programs for foreigners to gain american citizenship by serving in the armed forces.

Dude...not gonna lie it is relatively easy for a foreigner to serve as an enlisted soldier in the US military and many become US citizens, it also a shorter path to citizenship.

The hard bit is getting the permanent residency in the first place.

I honestly don't know too many of my friends(mates) have gone that route, maybe I should ask...all I know is I see pictures in the papers or online ever so often where like 200 servicemen get naturalized and most of them being pretty young.
