I am interested in putting together a living history group to represent the different units and belligerents of the Rhodesian Bush War 1965-1980.
I think it is an interesting period of military and world history and one that should not be forgotten.
Being that it is one not well known outside of Southern Africa or African Military History enthusiast I would like to create group to help educate the public about Rhodesia and the Bush War.
I am sure there are folks out there that do impressions, but I have not found any reenacting groups, or living history organizations dedicated to this particular war or period.
I figured this site would be a great staring place to see if there is enough support to build an organization.
Anyone interested please post here and let’s get the conversation started.
http://www.memoriesofrhodesia.com/ This website should offer plenty of help in regards to information and old television programs from Rhodesia. I have purchased from them before and it offered plenty of interviews with veterans and some footage from the bushwar.
I do believe that a living history group based around Rhodesians and South Africans could be a good thing opening up a different field of what was most definitely part of the cold war and educating people that there were two sides and i and a few friends in the US have been considering it ourselves but it will require extensive familiarization.
Also in regards to Blackwolfs site i love the song "It's a long way to mukumbura" but "What a time it was" has to be my favorite. Clem Thoelet ftw!
Also check the Rhodesian Bush War threads on this forum. There are some members here who were actually there and obviously that kind of a source of information should be looked into.
I have a lot of freinds who were there. I have been working in Africa as a security contractor for over five years now and I find many Rhodies in the business.
Here are some randome shots I saved from the net. A lot of the jackets are from http://www.samilitaria.com/SAM/ and I have done business with the owner. Great guy and amazing source of information on fakes as well as original kit.
The generals jacket was on ebay, bid and lost, but saved the pictures for ref.
I have just gotten w barnd new, unissued set (small size) for $50 here in Joburg. The rats ate a few holes, but they will be good for color matching for making repros and color matches.
The way I see it, there are several units that are needing reps;
1.) Rhodesian Light Infantry (R.L.I.)
2.) "C" Squadron Rhodesian SAS
3.) Selous Scouts
4.) Rhodesian African Rifles (R.A.R)
5.) British South African Police (B.S.A.P.)
6.) Internal Affairs (I.A.)
7.) Rhodesian Air Force
