Default Iran to repair Najaf shrine

    Iran to repair Najaf shrine
    From correspondents in Tehran

IRAN'S national heritage organisation offered today to pay for and carry out repairs to the mausoleum of Imam Ali, badly damaged during weeks of fighting in the central Iraqi city of Najaf.

Quoted in the local press, the head of the body's department for religious heritage said the body was "ready to send workers and meet all costs" involved in restoring one of Shiite Islam's holiest sites.

Hojatoleslam Hossen Shahmoradi nevertheless condemned what he said was a "ruthless" assault on the shrine of the father of Shiism by US-led forces.

Several parts of the mausoleum were badly damaged during three weeks of clashes in Najaf between fighters of the Mehdi army loyal to rebellious Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and US-led forces battling the uprising.

The site is a popular destination for pilgrims from Iran, where some 90 per cent of the population are Shiite Muslims.

What hypocrisy from Iran. First they send their minions to Iraq to cause
as much upheaval as possible, raise no objection to the fact that al-Sadr’s
militia was using the shrine as an armory and a fortified military installation,
now they want to send “workers and meet all costs". They’ve already sent enough
“workers”, we just can’t kill them fast enough.

a "ruthless" assault would have been bombing the thing into the ground

    Interesting.

So, it was honorable for fellow Shias to convert the mosque into a military fort?

    Quite Interesting, actually.

The fighing was rather ruthless... we did shoot at the shrine, we just didnt miss THEM much... nobodys saying a .50 cal will stop in a person... makes nice holes through stuff behind the intended target aswell

Yep. It's a bit foolish to assume Iran and Syria, even Saudi Arabia, would just sit there and let the US "win." OPEC itself has a stake in this, and so do France, Germany, Russia and China, as well as North Korea.

You don't put your forces in the middle of enemy territory and not follow up on it. They will slowly get picked off one by one. Even if some Iraqis support the US, their factional in-fighting and foreign influence will prevent any peace until someone gains power that the majority of the Arab world supports.

The US, the Coalition, and the Iraqi national government need to make a very big show of repairing it themselves. We do not want Iran fixing it, we want us fixing it. Have a good one, and just some thoughts...

I have been living almost 2/3 of my life in the 'west' so it's not an easy thing for me to decide to return or not. But my parents took the decision to go back and they're have been there for almost a year now. I stayed here to finish my study and then I will decide whether to go back or not.
