Don't get me wrong - even in the West, there are faint feelings of hierarchy between Western countries (not to mention between Western and non-Western countries, which forms a central dichotomy in today's ideological discourse), but in East Asia it is treated with a seriousness that has not existed in the West since the end of World War II. Indeed, it might be said that World War II was when extreme nationalism (in the form of fascism and ethnic/racial supremacism) was defeated in the West, though some might argue that it's making a come back.

In East Asia, however, it was never defeated. East Asians are simply embracing the nationalistic impulses that ravaged Europe a hundred years ago. I find a delicious, if disturbing, irony in this, and a bit of the universalism that another member alluded to, as well, though I don't think the particularities of East Asian cultures are incidental to the attraction of these ideas.

This time, Japan's rightwingers are protesting against a Japanese singing team, the Ayaman Japan.

Japanese rightwingers are protesting the use of the word "Japan" in the name of the Ayaman Japan as they find their performances degrading of Japan's reputations on the Youtube, and are demanding that the team either cease performing, or remove the word "Japan" from its name.

The reason for this outrage is that "XXXXXX Japan" is historically given to sports teams representing Japan in international events, like the Okada Japan(Japan's 2010 World Cup soccer team) and the Samurai Japan(Japan's WBC baseball team), so the rightwingers are offended by the term "Ayaman Japan".

Another update on the launching of JKT48(Indonesian Version of AKB48 made possible by Japanese government's Cool Japan initiative)'s launching in a few weeks. JKT48's launching is being closely watched in Japan as it would answer the question of if the Japanese culture can overcome the current Korean Wave that swept away the Southeast Asia.

But my Korean coworkers and I do find Korean nationalists funny. I mean they have so little historical evidence to make justification of racial/cultural superiority from. It's like if Cyrus became nationalistic in the Greece v Turkey ****fest. Much respect to Korea and all but historically they were the punching bag for Japan or China. Always either one or another. It's hard to spin it any other way. Not saying that takes away from their accomplishments. But any notions of national/racial/cultural superiority is just plain funny.

The best part is these nationalist are so alike it's funny. They do exactly the same thing they accuse the others of doing. I.e. Historical revisionism. The cognitive disconnect is delicious.

That's why Japan's music market has been overrun by Korean idol singers in the past couple of years.

You would puke when you can read minds of your coworkers.

Much respect to Korea and all but historically they were the punching bag for Japan or China.
Korea has just 330 years of foreign rule since 0 AD, 300 years of Han Chinese colonists in the small patch of land around today's Pyongyang, and the 35 years of Japanese imperialism.

China on the other hand were under foreign rule for more than 850 years since 0 AD, with China finally regaining its independence from foreign rulers in 1912. Chinese experience with foreign rule was much more vivid and drastic than what Koreans and Japanese could imagine. For example, Koreans spoke the same language and dressed the same from the rise and to the fall of Manchus, while Chinese spoke different languages(Language shift from Min Nan to Mandarin) and dressed totally differently under the brutal Manchu rule which executed anyone who refused to wear Manchurian hairdo.

This is the reason for Chinese history revisionism, since their true history of China as understood by China's neighbors are so depressing. China's history can be described as an endless struggle for independence against foreign invaders attracted by China's wealth, one after another.
